The soundtrack of Star Trek Into Darkness is getting a vinyl release, and Screen Rant has an exclusive first look at the set. The sequel to director J.J. Abrams’ hit 2009 franchise reboot, Star Trek Into Darkness introduced the classic Star Trek villain Khan and won over critics and audiences with stunning visuals and impressive action. The movie led into a third film, Star Trek Beyond, which brought in a new director in Justin Lin but maintained the winning formula that Abrams had established with the first two movies.

Screen Rant is excited to announce the first-ever vinyl release of the Star Trek Into Darkness score. The movie boasts music by A-list film composer and Werewolf by Night director Michael Giacchino, whose other work includes Inside Out, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Jojo Rabbit. The Deluxe Edition of the score is a 3-LP set themed after Starfleet uniforms and boasting a Starfleet Insignia-shaped hole that allows fans to pick their own cover image thanks to film artwork on each vinyl’s sleeve. The collection also comes with a 16-page booklet stuffed with behind-the-scenes photos and notes from Abrams and Giacchino.

What’s The Status Of Star Trek 4?

Michael Giacchino wrote music for more than Star Trek Into Darkness, ultimately composing the scores for all three films in that continuity. Since Star Trek Beyond released in 2016, the question of if and when a fourth franchise entry would arrive has persisted. In March, a story published by Variety suggested that Star Trek 4 is happening, and will be the “final chapter” in the franchise. The screenplay is being penned by Steve Yockey, who has not worked on the franchise but did write on Supernatural.

The same article stated that the 2009 reboot cast, led by Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana, would return in the new film, but an official confirmation hasn’t been released. Other casting choices are naturally unconfirmed as well, though there is a chance Whoopi Goldberg could return to Star Trek in the new film. The reason for the vagueness is likely simply that Yockey hasn’t completed the script yet which, unfortunately, likely means the movie is a few years away.

The most pressing musical question is whether or not Giacchino will return. Star Trek is a strong entry on the list of Michael Giacchino’s best film scores, and his return would surely help keep things consistent for the so-called final chapter. Notably, Giacchino went on to score Star Trek Beyond even after Abrams decided not to direct the project, suggesting his return isn’t fully dependent on who is helming the upcoming movie. Even if he doesn’t score Star Trek 4, however, chances are high that Giacchino’s memorable themes will be used.
