Star Trek was honored with the prestigious Peabody Institutional Award and the 84th annual Peabody Awards ceremony, which many luminaries from Star Trek‘s past and present, including Patrick Stewart and executive producer Alex Kurtzman, accepted. The Peabody Institutional Award recognizes an organization or long-running television program that has made an indelible mark on the American broadcasting landscape. This year’s Peabody Institutional Award not only recognizes the numerous artists who contributed to Star Trek in front of and behind the camera, but also, the fans for “helping to invent a model of fandom that has since taken over the world.”

Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman accepted the Peabody Institutional Award on behalf of Star Trek, and he gave a special tribute to Bjo Trimble, whose letter-writing campaign with her late husband John saved Star Trek from cancelation after season 2. Joining Kurtzman and Trimble on behalf of Star Trek were Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, Jeri Ryan, Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Wilson Cruz, Doug Jones, Scott Bakula, Tawny Newsome, Sam Richardson, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, Michelle Paradise, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Noga Landau, Jenny Lumet and Trevor Roth. The Peabody was presented to Kurtzman by Star Trek director and producer J.J. Abrams.
