Gary Johnson learned an important lesson at the end of Hit Man. The movie stars Glen Powell as Gary, a college professor who secretly pretends to be a hitman and uses various aliases to survive. The story generally follows Gary’s decision to break away from his life as an undercover spy after meeting Madison, a woman who begs to have her husband killed. After the story ends, Gary gives an passionate speech to his class about the subjectivity of life and the importance of living how they want to live their lives.

In an interview with TODAY.com, Powell explained the meaning behind the movie’s optimistic ending. With Gary agreeing to support Madison by killing a fellow police officer, the pair are able to live a peaceful life together as a married couple with children. In Powell’s opinion, it gave Gary the chance to live as the man he always wanted to be, rather than hiding behind an old identity. Check out his full quote below:

“If you feel like you’re stuck in life, if you feel like you’re stuck in an identity that’s not making you happy, just make the choice to change. And I think that’s what you see is two people that make each other very happy in new roles and these new faces and identities.”
