Suguru Geto is one of the best characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, being one of the few to receive an elaborate backstory, one intertwined with Satoru Gojo as well. Geto is one of the four Special Grade sorcerers in the series, at least in an ‘official’ manner. Though, over time, Geto’s status as one of the Special Grades has become less and less believable, due to not having that diverse of a skill set.

Geto’s main technique is Curse Manipulation, which allows him to absorb curses and use them again later. This is an incredible power to wield, and sits among the best techniques in the series. Especially notable is his lack of Reverse Cursed Technique, a technique that would let him heal from lethal injuries almost immediately. There are a few explanations for not having these abilities, but prime among them is the fact Geto was introduced too early into the series, before several of these concepts were even introduced.

Geto Lacks What Other Special Grades Have

No Reverse Curse Technique, No Domain Expansion

Comparing Suguru to his fellow special grades is, in one case, unfair. Gojo is one of the special grades, and is undoubtedly the most powerful of them, practically having mastered his technique, achieved a Domain Expansion, and possessing the Reverse Cursed Technique too. Comparing the two is pretty unfair, as it would be to compare any sorcerer to Gojo. It is more fair to compare Geto to Yuta Okkotsa, the boy who ultimately ended him. Yuta, while initially a rather poor sorcerer, quickly developed his skills and control over Rika, the incredibly powerful cursed spirit he fought with.

Geto targeted Yuta to get Rika for himself, only to fall in battle against the incredibly adaptable sorcerer. Rapidly having developed to keep pace with Suguru, Yuta managed to master his technique, and by the time the plot of Jujutsu Kaisen begins, he has definitely become worthy of the title of Special Grade. The last special grade is Yuki Tsukumo, who inspired Geto’s own ideals in a short discussion they shared. Not only is her ‘Star Rage’ technique incredibly powerful, but she too has the Reverse Cursed Technique mastered. Once again, Geto’s only ever showed off his Curse Technique alone.

Geto Just Died Too Early to Get More Powerful

Lack of Screentime Deprived him of Abilities

The real reason Geto now looks woefully unfit to be a Special Grade sorcerer is because he was introduced (and died) in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequel movie to Jujutsu Kaisen. In terms of the manga, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 actually predated Jujutsu Kaisen, and only scratched the surface of the power system that Gege Akutami would later expand on. While concepts like the Grade system and Cursed Techniques were still central, the further developed concepts like Domain Expansion and Reverse Cursed Technique were not.

Gojo simply never had to use those during the length of the prequel, and the Hidden Inventory arc later shows how he developed those abilities in his youth. Yuta seemingly developed off-screen, gaining an instinctual ability to utilize the Reverse Cursed Technique. Yuki was only introduced in Jujutsu Kaisen itself, and thus always had these abilities. While Geto did realize and master his technique in full, achieving a ‘Maximum’ technique, he simply doesn’t match up to the Special Grades of the main series.

While Suguru Geto is clearly far from being a weak individual, he no longer matches up with the top sorcerers of the series. It’s likely Gege never intended for this to be the case, but with Geto being dead, he can no longer show off or develop new abilities either. It’s a pity that one of Jujutsu Kaisen‘s best characters now comes off as weak, but it is simply a fact of being introduced too early to have an expanded set of powers at all.
