This article contains spoilers for 9-1-1 season 7.

In the final episode of 9-1-1 season 7, Los Angeles’ first responders each have their own (mostly) happy endings, however, the last scene of the season creates a conflict that will make season 8 more annoying than it is entertaining. The seventh season of 9-1-1 was filled with daring rescues and dangerous situations, and episode 10 was no different. After a devastating house fire, Bobby is in critical condition and Athena is determined to find the arsonist, while Hen struggles for custody and Eddie faces a troubling reality with Christopher.

One great success of 9-1-1 is its ability to introduce big problems while also having a happy ending. This last season is a great example. Although Bobby and Athena almost lose their lives on a sinking cruise ship, their first responder skills and strong friendships help them survive. Similarly, in the final episode, Bobby pulls through from his heart attack and Athena accepts that revenge may not be the answer. However, some problems on the show are much more exciting than others, and the storyline created during 9-1-1 season 7’s ending certainly won’t be as riveting ahead of 9-1-1 season 8.

Vincent’s 9-1-1 Season 8 Return Could Destroy The 118

Vincent Will Only Hurt The 118

Vincent Gerrard (Brian Thompson) looking serious in 9-1-1 season 2

The last scene in 9-1-1 season 7 shows the 118 finally reuniting, with Bobby returning to his position as captain. However, the squad’s joy is quickly squashed when Vincent Gerrard shows up, revealing that he is actually their new captain after Bobby’s resignation. This bit of news not only dulls the mood of the scene but sets 9-1-1 season 8 on a disappointing path. If Vincent will truly be captain of the 118 for the foreseeable future, the firehouse will be in for a bad time, and in turn, so will the rest of the 9-1-1 cast.

Vincent has been an overarching villain since 9-1-1 season 2. Most notably, he was the fire captain of 118 when both Chimney and Hen started as firefighters. Vincent seriously doubted Chimney and Hen’s abilities and acted prejudiced towards them. In fact, it was Vincent’s sexism towards Hen that led him to be removed as captain. Ultimately, this complicated history with the 118 is what makes him such a terrible presence in 9-1-1 season 8. It seems more than likely that Vincent will return to his bullying behavior, putting the 118 in a difficult spot.

Bobby May Not Have A Future With His Team After 9-1-1 Season 7

Bobby Cannot Be Captain Again

Vincent’s return as captain is painful for another reason. As he noted in the final episode, Vincent got the job because Bobby resigned as captain. Therefore, if Bobby wanted to return to the 118, it’s unlikely he would get his old captain position back. If anything, he would have to accept a demotion and be at Vincent’s whim to stay at the firehouse. Even worse, Bobby may not return to the 118 at all. In the end, the addition of Vincent to 9-1-1 season 8 could make the new season incredibly disappointing.
