Warning: contains spoilers for The Ultimates #1

There is a new Avengers team in the Marvel Universe, and they have the perfect battle cry. Marvel’s new Ultimate imprint is giving fans radical and forward-thinking new takes on Spider-Man, Black Panther and the X-Men. In The Ultimates #1, a new team of Avengers rises to help liberate their world from the evil Maker. As they go into their first battle, they unveil an awesome riff on “Avengers Assemble.”

The Ultimates #1 is written by Deniz Camp and drawn by Juan Frigeri. Tony Stark, in this world called Iron Lad, is bringing together a new Ultimates team. Among the ranks include a recently unfrozen Captain America, Sif, and this world’s Reed Richards. As they attempt to recruit Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, Captain Britain attacks the team.

Iron Lad rallies the rest of the team, and as they charge into battle, he screams: “Ultimates attack,” but in between the two words he briefly pauses, not sure what to say.

The New Ultimate Universe Honors the Original

Marvel’s New Ultimate Line Is Giving Fans Bold Takes on Classic Marvel Icons

Marvel has resurrected the Ultimate Universe, giving it a new spin for a new era. The original line reflected the world of the early 21st century, and the new incarnation embodies the anxieties and fears of the 2020s. The Maker slowly took over an alternate Earth, ensuring that the age of heroes never came to pass, and those that did get their powers were under his control. Howard Stark opposed the Maker, and managed to seal him off for 18 months. With the Maker temporarily out, Tony Stark is bringing together a new group of Avengers to oppose him.

Iron Lad is not having an easy go at assembling a new Avengers squad. Thor, who could be the most powerful of the team, is in a coma. Captain America has just recently returned, and has no time to adjust to the year 2024 before finding himself pressed into war against the Maker. Giant Man is prone to bouts of self-doubt. None of this bodes well for Iron Lad and his crusade to free Earth.

Yet as seen in The Ultimates #1, Iron Lad manages to unite these new heroes together, and the battle cry he utters beforehand is absolutely perfect. The Avengers are no strangers to battle cries, namely Captain America’s famous “Avengers Assemble!” Here, Iron Lad tries a similar tactic, hoping desperately to motivate Sif, Wasp and the rest. The pause in the battle cry shows that Iron Lad is still not sure about this new team of Avengers, yet they manage to score their first decisive victory against the Maker and his Council, getting their career off to a grand start.
