WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for Wonder Woman #9!Sorry, Batman and Superman, but Wonder Woman is officially the ‘Greatest of All Time’ because of one indisputable fact. However, there’s the looming question of whether Diana Prince will maintain her newly appointed GOAT status as King’s run progresses, pushing Wonder Woman to new extremes that hint at a possible defeat.

Wonder Woman #9, by Tom King and Daniel Samper, kicks off the second part of the Sacrifice arc, which revolves around The Sovereign’s attempts to break Diana’s will. Issue #8 saw him use the Lasso of Lies to no avail. However, in issue #9, he employs a more insidious approach—solitary confinement.

This form of torture is particularly brutal for Diana, who thrives on social connection. To combat it, Wonder Woman retreats into her own mind, exploring various dreamscapes. Within these dreams, a key difference between her, Batman, and Superman emerges, solidifying her as the Justice League’s GOAT.

Sorry, Batman and Superman, But Wonder Woman Is the Greatest of All Time Because She Remains UNDEFEATED

Wonder Woman #9 featuring Diana and Steve Trevor part 2

Each dreamscape that Wonder Woman retreats to features a different location, yet they all share one common element—Steve’s presence. In one of these encounters, Diana and the imaginary Steve engage in an argument when she expresses her readiness to surrender to The Sovereign. Diana points out that she isn’t Bruce or Clark, implying that she isn’t as resilient as they are and can endure no longer. Steve acknowledges that she isn’t Bruce or Clark but reminds her,Clark was killed. Bruce was broken. You, Diana, remain undefeated. Despite these words coming from an imaginary Steve, they undeniably ring true.

This poignant quote alludes to two of the most character-defining moments in Batman and Superman’s comic history—when Bane broke Bruce’s back and when Doomsday killed Kal-El. Hence, Wonder Woman remains undefeated in the sense that she hasn’t been killed or broken in the ways that both Batman and Superman have. Notably, Diana has also triumphed against every challenge in King’s run so far, including taking on a team of her most formidable rogues all at once, breaking the bonds of the Lasso of Lies, and now enduring her solitary confinement. Therefore, King has positioned Wonder Woman as the Justice League’s GOAT.

Fans Will Riot If Tom King’s Run Ends With Anything But Triumph For Wonder Woman

King has meticulously developed Wonder Woman’s indomitable spirit in this series to such an extent that if it concludes with Diana surrendering to The Sovereign, fans will undoubtedly revolt. Such an ending would render all of Wonder Woman’s suffering and triumphs meaningless. Additionally, seeing Wonder Woman fall at the hands of such a despicable, decrepit villain would feel like the ultimate betrayal to her character. However, there is a distinct possibility that King is preparing to give Diana her own Knightfall/The Death of Superman moment. Whether Wonder Woman truly needs such a character-defining story arc is ultimately left to each fan to decide for themselves.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is the superhero identity of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes. As mighty as her fellow heroes Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unmatched in her compassion and virtue.
