Warning: Contains SPOILERS for X-Men Forever #3The X-Men‘s ranks feature some of Marvel Comics’ most powerful characters, and few mutants wield more raw power than Professor X’s son, Legion. Gifted with Omega-level power manifestation, David Haller has been one of mutantkind’s heaviest hitters since his debut. And with the Fall of X altering the X-Men’s status quo, Legion’s final form has been altered as well – turning him into the ultimate weapon that he always could be.

X-Men Forever #3 by Kieron Gillen, Luca Maresca, Federico Blee, and VC’s Clayton Cowles follows Hope Summers’ quest to aid and resurrect the Phoenix within the White Hot Room. After being gifted with Nightcrawler’s Hopesword by her disciple, Exodus, Hope realizes the weapon isn’t what it seems. The sentient sword reveals its true identity to be Legion himself.

Asking Hope, “You’re not a sword fan, yeah,?” Legion reshapes himself into a massive gun. And by adjusting himself to reflect Hope’s more utilitarian nature, David gives Hope the firepower she needs to save the day.

The X-Men are no stranger to complex family trees, but Cyclops’ family has been through more than most – and the Fall of X has claimed a new victim.

Hope Summers Is Her Father’s Daughter

Legion Is Hope’s Ultimate Living Weapon

Having previously hid himself from Mother Righteous both inside Nightcrawler’s heart and within his Hopesword, Legion has played an important role throughout the end of the X-Men’s first Krakoan Age. His actions here are no different. Giving the Mutant Messiah the extra support necessary to ensure the survival of the mutant race is the best possible use of Legion’s considerable power. And with everything he did for Krakoa both in Way of X and Legion of X, it’s no surprise that David would be instrumental to this Krakoan Age’s final act.

Legion’s transformation ultimately reflects Hope’s dedication to Krakoa as much as it does his. After all, as part of Cyclops’ family, Hope is always going to use the best possible tool to get the job done. She’s also self-aware enough to know with which tool she’s the most effective. Being the daughter of Cable, there’s no weapon more fitting for her final mission than an impractically large gun. And considering the legacies that both Hope and Legion represent, their dedication to the mutant dream couldn’t be more in-character.

Legion And Hope Represent Mutantkind’s Future

They Are The X-Men’s Most Powerful Legacies

Legion is one of the X-Men’s most powerful characters, and his tactical final form reflects not just his own potential as a living weapon, but Hope Summers’ as well. Fortunately for the Children of the Atom, these formidable heroes are supremely committed to the ideals for which Krakoa stands, and they’ll always go the extra mile to defend their people. And considering this issue cements their status as living weapons, both Legion and Hope Summers ultimately represent some of the X-Men’s most dangerous firepower in a very literal sense.
