Hal Jordan’s world is about to change, but the Green Lantern is getting a new ‘costume’ that reflects the hero’s resilient and adventurous spirit. Absolute Power is coming to the DC Universe this summer and every metahuman is about to be rendered absolutely powerless.

Even the Emerald Knight isn’t above losing his powers like his comrades and things are only going to get worse as the team is hunted down by the all-Amazo Squad known as Task Force VII. But even though he’s got no powers, Green Lantern isn’t giving up and his costume shows the determination he’s bringing to DC’s upcoming event.

THE TRINITY OF EVIL HAS WON. DC’s epic summer event kicks off with a bang, as the combined might of FAILSAFE and the BRAINIAC QUEEN has at last given Amanda Waller the ability to steal the metahuman abilities of every hero and villain on planet Earth. As chaos erupts in the streets and a massive misinformation campaign sways public opinion to her side, the founder of the Suicide Squad methodically targets each superhero dynasty one at a time, starting with SUPERMAN. But even in this darkest of hours, a resistance is forming…and BATMAN is out for vengeance. It’s a shocking blitzkrieg across the globe that is decades in the making—and will shape the course of the DC Universe for years to come! Brought to you by the superstar talents of MARK WAID and DAN MORA—it all starts here!

This summer, DC Comics is releasing Absolute Power, its epic crossover event that sees Amanda Waller teaming up with Batman’s robotic contingency Failsafe teaming up with the evil alien newcomer, the Brainiac Queen. Utilizing the powers of her Trinity of Evil allies, Waller finally succeeds in her ultimate plan and robs the Earth’s metahumans of their powers. To help ensure her rule over the de-powered heroes and villains, Waller has drafted Failsafe’s squad of Amazos, each one armed with the power of an iconic Justice League member.

Unfortunately for the world, even the Justice League wasn’t able to avoid this power draining. Superman, Wonder Woman, and every one of the League’s most powerful members have lost their unique abilities. While the robotic menace Jadestone steals the powers of Alan Scott to give Task Force VII its own Green Lantern, Hal Jordan’s ring has lost its charge after returning to Earth. Per the solicitations for Green Lantern #13, Hal must find the new Green Lantern Central Power Battery to get the power boost he desperately needs.

With no juice left in his Power Ring, Green Lantern has no costume to speak of. But that doesn’t mean Hal isn’t going into the fray without a costume. As Dan Mora’s ‘Resistance’ wraparound variant cover for Absolute Power #1 reveals, Hal is wearing a flight suit, as well as the bomber jacket his father wore. As John Timms’ variant for Absolute Power: Task Force VII #3 shows, Hal is also going to represent the Corps with his new outfit by painting the Green Lantern symbol on his jacket.

DC fans who know anything about Green Lantern know that before he was selected to join the Corps, Hal Jordan was an ace pilot. The more hardcore fans may also know that Jordan’s love of soaring through the air was inspired by his father, Martin Jordan, who was a test pilot in Ferris Air’s early days. Green Lantern admired his father, but tragedy struck him as a child when he witnessed his father perish in a crash caused by a malfunction in the jet Martin was flying.

Despite the harrowing loss, Green Lantern’s faith in his father and his love of air travel never waned. Against the judgment of his family, Hal joined the Air Force as soon as he turned 18 so he could follow in his father’s footsteps and experience the same thrills Martin Jordan did in his heyday. Hal was so much like his father, that he even wound up working for Ferris Air after Hal was discharged from the Air Force, reuniting with his future flame and employer, Carol Ferris.

Hal Jordan’s life was all about soaring through the air and it was even during a test flight that Hal was summoned by Abin Sur’s Power Ring. The former Green Lantern of Sector 2814 had been gravely injured while escorting a prisoner through space and sent out his ring to find a suitable replacement. Hal Jordan was the closest person and was offered the chance to be Sur’s replacement. Hal, who had only ever known flying through the skies, eagerly jumped to become the new Green Lantern and started traveling the entire galaxy.

Green Lantern’s Simple Outfit Brings Hal Back to the Basics

Hal Jordan Wearing Bomber Jacket DC

Unlike his Justice League comrades, who are all geared up to survive the onslaught of Absolute Power, Hal eschews armor and weapons for clothes more appropriate for his best skill: Piloting. Amanda Waller’s power-stealing scheme might be able to take out heat vision and super-strength, but it likely can’t take away the hard work Hal put in to become an ace pilot. Perhaps Green Lantern has chosen his more simplified look to take back to the skies during Absolute Power.

People like Superman and Wonder Woman won’t be able to fly naturally, so having someone like Hal who can get people into the air will be a valuable asset to have. Sure it’s not as fast as Clark or Diana’s flight speeds, but in a world where superpowers are disappearing, it’s the best the Justice League has. One would think Hal would be a bit afraid of flying jets as Task Force VII starts patrolling the world, but Green Lantern’s new outfit also serves as a powerful reminder for Hal.

Green Lanterns are known for their lack of fear and for Hal, no one was as fearless to him as Martin Jordan. While Jordan was plagued with doubts about what his father’s final moments must have been like, Hal has always believed Martin was fearless till the end. Now, in a world where the heroes are powerless and Amanda Waller is out to take total control, Hal has more reason than ever to be afraid. But as long as he’s wearing his father’s jacket, Green Lantern isn’t going to give in to fear that easily.

Green Lantern’s Costume Will Keep Him Fearless as Ever

Hal Jordan faces off against many enemies in Blackest Night

Hal Jordan has given into fear in his darkest moments and Absolute Power looks to be one of the darkest moments in DC history. But Green Lantern has made a smart decision by wearing his father’s coat. Whenever he looks at it, he can remember the kind of brave and fearless person Green Lantern knew Martin to be. This kind of costume can aid Hal and keep him determined as he and his friends take on Waller and her terrifying new forces. It might be simple, but Green Lantern’s new costume is absolutely perfect for him.

Absolute Power #1 is available on July 3rd from DC Comics.
