The release date for The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 has been revealed in a new video. The animated Prime Video show is based on an actual Dungeons & Dragons campaign played on the web series Critical Role during their first season, which aired between 2015 and 2017. The Legend of Vox Machina cast features Critical Role members Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Taliesin Jaffe, Matthew Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, Marisha Ray, and Travis Willingham providing the voices for their original characters.
Prime Video has now unveiled the official opening title sequence for The Legend of Vox Machina season 3. Check it out below:
The title sequence takes on a slightly different atmosphere from the previous seasons, with new animated footage accompanying an updated instrumental theme that is slightly more pastoral and serene than the intense battle music that formerly preceded the show. The end of the video then reveals that the season 3 premiere date will be October 3.
Is October The Right Time To Bring Back The Legend Of Vox Machina?
The Critical Role Show Will Face Harsh Competition
The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 premiering in October breaks the precedent set by the previous two seasons of the show. Both seasons ran from January through February in their respective years, premiering almost exactly a year apart. While waiting until January 2025 to premiere season 3 would have resulted in an extra-long hiatus of two full years, the show is now facing an untested Fall release that could impact its reception. Because January is typically a quieter time in movie theaters, this October release means that there will be more competition for viewership than the Legend of Vox Machina show has ever faced before. Movies that are currently scheduled to premiere in October 2024 include horror sequels such as Terrifier 3 and Smile 2 as well as major blockbuster tentpoles including Joker: Folie à Deux, Mortal Kombat 2, and Venom: The Last Dance. On the streaming side, it will also have to compete with other shows including Netflix’s Heartstopper season 3, which premieres on the same day.
It seems likely that Prime Video is positioning The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 to naturally follow the finale of their live-action fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which airs its season 2 finale on October 3. However, that season will be premiering at around the same time that HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon ends its own second season. With television being so inundated with blockbuster fantasy as of October, the animated show may become a victim of fantasy fatigue as well as being compared unfavorably to such big-budget productions.

Set in a fantasy world of elves, gnomes, vampires, and even dragons, the series stars the cast of Critical Role playing their characters from the original campaign, with DM Matthew Mercer guest starring in various small roles throughout the series.
