Vision is one of Marvel’s most durable heroes, thanks to his incredible range of powers and android body, but a recent confrontation showed his extreme steps to keep himself alive. After a confrontation with the “Angel” intent on destroying Scarlet Witch, Vision was rendered unconscious, only to later be revived by his daughter, Viv. Vision and his daughter act as “backups” for each other’s consciousness, ensuring neither can truly die.

In Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #4, Vision joins the Maximoff twins to confront the Wizard. While Wanda and Pietro handle that threat, Vision attempts to get answers from the source: the “Angel” giving the Wizard his direction.

Instead of satisfying his questions, he’s rendered unconscious. When the Avenger wakes under Viv and Wanda’s care, he reveals that his daughter acts as his backup, protecting him from “cosmic visions” and other threats. It keeps the two androids alive under extreme duress and allows them to share information, making them nearly immortal and incredibly efficient together.

As an Avenger, Vision faces a wealth of threats on a regular basis. Though his synthezoid body gives him a major edge over an ordinary human, he’s far from indestructible, and it’s no surprise that he came up with a literal back-up plan for his potential destruction. Being an android gives him the unique opportunity to store and retain his consciousness and memories even if his body is destroyed or corrupted. By engineering other beings like himself, as he did with Viv, he ensures his continued existence and offers her the same benefit. Where one survives, both survive.

Establishing a family as an android took true out-of-the-box thinking. Vision shares two children, the Young Avengers known as Wiccan and Speed, with Scarlet Witch, but he “created” Viv Vision himself as a part of his idealistic all-android family unit. While she shares many features with her father, she has established her own personality and friendships, and her connection with Vision’s memories following his encounter with the “Angel” could yield valuable insight. Not only did Viv keep her father alive by acting as a backup, but she could be an asset to Wanda going forward, too.

Vision and Viv’s link proves useful here, as it allows her to understand Scarlet Witch’s plight and bring her father back “online”, and it paints an overall positive outlook for the family in general. Little is known about what the “Angel” is capable of, but the Marvel Universe has beings of incalculable power which the Avengers often face. Vision’s tactic is a built-in failsafe against anything. Barring an unfortunate set of circumstances where he and his daughter simultaneously succumb to a threat, he will return. Vision and his family act eternal back-ups for each other, creating their own immortal network.
