Most of the Forman family is back for That ‘90s Show season 2, but the trailer’s teases with Leia make me sad for the sequel series’ versions of That ‘70s Show’s Eric and Donna. That ‘90s Show’s basic premise is set up very similarly to the original series. However, Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) are still the ones overseeing a group of rebellious Point Place teens as their granddaughter, Leia, stays with them for the summer, rather than her parents Donna and Eric taking over this role. Consequently, Donna and Eric are still largely taking the backseat in experiencing Leia’s teenage angst and milestones over the summer in That ‘90s Show season 2.

While Topher Grace’s Eric Forman made a cameo in That ‘90s Show’s season 1 premiere, it doesn’t appear that he’ll be reprising his role as Donna’s husband and Leia’s father in season 2. Laura Prepon is confirmed to return for a small role as Donna in season 2 as her father, Bob Pinciotti (Don Stark), moves back to Point Place, though it seems she’ll still largely be back in Chicago. As such, the trailer for That ‘90s Show season 2 sees some important coming-of-age moments being played out with Red, Kitty, and Bob being there for Leia, which, despite being heartwarming, still makes me sad for Eric and Donna.

It Looks Like Eric & Donna Are Missing Out On Huge Moments With Leia In That ’90s Show Season 2

Eric & Donna aren’t around for some crucial moments in Leia’s teenage years

From her seemingly inevitable first breakup to teaching her how to drive a car, the trailer for That ‘90s Show season 2 teases that Donna and Eric are missing out on some huge moments in their daughter’s teenage life. While Donna rushed back to Point Place upon hearing that Leia was thinking of sleeping with Jay ahead of That ‘90s Show season 1’s ending, it’s hard not to imagine how much more rewarding it would be to see more of these big moments played out with Eric and Donna instead of Red and Kitty. As much as I love seeing Red and Kitty rear another group of Point Place teens, it’s Eric and Donna’s turn to experience these trials and tribulations of raising a teenager.

After watching Eric and Donna come of age and go through many of the same struggles in That ‘70s Show, I would find it far more engaging to see the couple finally step into Red and Kitty’s shoes rather than see them go through it all again. Red and Kitty seem to try to recruit Donna and Eric to come over to Point Place when a really serious issue or moment has arisen with Leia, but this doesn’t cover all the interactions I’d really love to see with the next generation of That ‘70s Show’s Forman family. Rather, seeing Donna and Eric with Leia in the quieter, seemingly less important moments is equally significant.

Considering Eric may not appear in That ‘90s Show season 2 at all, seeing these big moments with Leia makes me upset for him. Eric’s season 1 cameo made it clear that he really loved Leia and wanted to spend time with her, but struggled to connect with her as she grew into a teenager. Teaching her how to drive, talking her through a breakup, taking her to sports games over the summer, and spending time with her on her birthday would have been great ways for Eric and Leia to foster a better relationship when she’s not in school, but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for That ‘90s Show season 2.

Eric Should Be The One Teaching Leia How To Drive The Vista Cruiser In That ’90s Show

The Vista Cruiser was the symbol of Eric’s freedom, confidence, and maturity

The moment that made me most upset for Eric in That ‘90s Show season 2’s trailer was the teased sequence of Red, Kitty, and Bob teaching Leia how to drive in the Vista Cruiser. If there was any object that most represented Eric in That ‘70s Show, it was his Vista Cruiser. It allowed him the freedom and confidence he needed to break out of his shell and work for what he wanted ahead of That ‘70s Show‘s finale, with some of the most important moments in his teenage and early adult years being associated with the car.

If anyone should have been teaching Leia to drive in that car, it should have been Eric. The passing of the torch between generations in That ‘90s Show has largely been through Red and Kitty to the new teens, but the Vista Cruiser would have been an incredible way to see Eric and his friends literally and figuratively give the keys to Leia’s generation. It’s still entertaining to see Leia’s grandparents take so much pride and joy in being there for her in these moments, but I believe that learning how to drive the Vista Cruiser should have been a teaching moment reserved for Eric.

That ’90s Show Still Needs To Include Scenes With Leia, Eric & Donna On Their Own

That ’90s Show needs a more intimate glimpse into Eric, Donna & Leia’s family dynamic

While there’s no indication of whether Topher Grace will reprise his role as Eric Forman again, it would be a missed opportunity to never feature some scenes with just Leia, Eric, and Donna. That ‘90s Show has largely only featured scenes with Eric, Donna, and Leia with Red and Kitty, so the dynamic between just those three is still a mystery in the Netflix sitcom. There’s plenty more story left to tell about Leia’s teen years in Point Place in the 1990s, and I hope That ‘90s Show doesn’t come to an end before getting a closer glimpse at Leia, Eric, and Donna’s lives together, either in Point Place or Chicago.
