Warning! Contains spoilers for Sweet Tooth season 3.

While walking through Gus and Big Man’s final adventure to the Great North, Sweet Tooth season 3 features a range of songs that add more intensity to the show’s drama and action. Based on Jeff Lemire’s comic book series of the same name, Netflix’s Sweet Tooth presents an uplifting fantasy drama that draws on the anxieties of the real-world pandemic but balances them themes with themes of hope and resilience. Unlike its predecessors, Sweet Tooth season 3 delves deeper into slightly darker narrative territory but maintains its family-friendly tone.

Instead of treading the same path as its source material and walking through the disturbing aspects of its final arcs, Sweet Tooth season 3 softens some of the darker elements of the original story to remain more accessible to wider audiences. Its bright visuals and storytelling devices play a significant role in maintaining its heartwarming spirit. At the same time, even its upbeat tracks add another layer of positivity to its portrayal of a hopeful post-apocalyptic world.

“The Beginning Is also the End”

“Road to Alaska” by Bee Gees: This track plays in Sweet Tooth season 3’s opening scene, in which Gus, Bear, Big Man, and Wendy drive to Alaska to find Birdie. Although Sweet Tooth season 3 eventually takes a few dark turns, this opening track sets the stage for an optimistic and upbeat season.

“Some Sweet Day” by Juanita Jordan: On their way to Alaska, Gus and the team stop at a Casino, hoping to find some clothes and food for their journey to Alaska. However, what initially seems like a deserted Casino turns out to be the post-apocalyptic home for a group of old people. As they give Gus and the crew a tour of their abode, this track plays in the background.

“Turn to Dust” by Wolf Alice: Gus feels lucky towards the end of Sweet Tooth season 3’s episode 1 and gambles his bottle of maple syrup in return for food and clothes for their Alaska adventure. To his dismay, he loses the bet and ends up losing his last bottle of syrup. As the old people celebrate their new win, Gus and the crew leave the place as Wolf Alice’s “Turn to Dust” reflects their sadness.

“Tuckin'” by Grateful Dead: Back at the Alaskan Outpost, the young hybrid girl, Nuka, lightens up everyone’s mood by playing Grateful Dread’s “Tuckin'” at the local bar’s Jukebox. While she is at it, Fiona and Birdie talk about Gus and Birdie’s anxieties about not being able to meet him.
