Creator Noah Hawley addresses the Fargo season 6 delay as work on his Alien TV series continues. Created by Hawley, based on the Coen brothers’ 1996 film of the same name, each season of FX’s anthology series follows a different story set in the American Midwest with mostly new cast and characters, with season 5 ending earlier this year. Hawley is also the creator of another series for FX based on an iconic film, the upcoming Alien TV show, which is currently filming and expected to premiere in the first half of 2025.

During a recent appearance on Deadline‘s podcast Crew Call with Anthony D’Alessandro, Hawley addressed the Fargo season 6 delay as work on his Alien TV series continues. The creator of both shows discussed balancing two series in the past, Legion and Fargo, though time is different since the “scale of Alien dwarfs anything [he’s] made before.” Hawley also suggested that FX wants to make a second season of Alien as soon as possible. However, he is still uncertain about what he will do after he’s finished with season 1. Read his full comments below:

There was a moment in which I was doing Legion and Fargo and prepping Lucy and then going back into Legion. It was a lot, I’ll tell you. The scale of Alien dwarfs anything I made before. So I think quite rightly they’re saying, “Maybe don’t do two things at once on this show.” I think in success there hope is to put a season 2 as close to season 1 as possible. The reality of this moment in our business is as much as it feels like a no-brainer to say, “Why don’t you just greenlight two seasons?” that there is a need to make sure for the money that the show’s going to perform and it’s going to get the viewership before you can go into production on a second season. That seems very reasonable to me.

My instinct would be, “Let’s roll right into something else,” but you want to be prepared to do a second season, if you have that opportunity, you want to put a writers room together, you want to get your scripts ready and so everything’s right there. I think they’re hope is to keep my focus on Alien at this moment. Right now, that’s where my focus is, but if there’s too much downtime I can get restless.

We’re wrapping up, I’m going to go into post. I’m going to have a period of time before we film another season of Fargo. The question is what am I going to do with that time. We would have asked to write another season of Alien, would I also work on Fargo? That’s very likely that I might do it, but I also got other movies that I want to make and books to write. Likely, I have this luxury of time to figure out what’s the next step and what I want to work on.

What’s The Status Of Fargo Season 6?

FX Hasn’t Officially Renewed It

Since season 5 finished airing on January 16, once again to rave reactions from critics and audiences, FX has not officially renewed Fargo season 6. Historically, the network has taken its time before renewing Fargo, sometimes taking several years in between seasons. For example, season 5 was officially renewed nearly two years after season 4 ended in 2020.

The Fargo season 5 finale wraps up all the storylines, including the intense conflict between Dot Lyon and her abusive ex, Sheriff Roy Tillman.

In past interviews, Hawley said that he hasn’t run out of new stories to tell in Fargo, and expressed interest and enthusiasm in continuing the anthology series for seasons to come. Of course, what’s complicating matters is that he’s currently working on his Alien TV series, also for FX, which is delaying the timeline for a potential Fargo season 6. Based on his recent comments on the podcast, it sounds like FX is pushing Hawley to go straight into making a second season of Alien, which may delay a sixth season of Fargo even more.

Considering Fargo‘s success over the years and Hawley’s strong relationship with FX, he will likely have the opportunity to make season 6 whenever he chooses. However, it might be delayed indefinitely due to his commitments to the Alien series, which he is directing several episodes of and expects to film until July 2024. Fargo season 6 should happen at some point after that, or if Hawley goes straight into a second season, it will be pushed back even further.
