Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #4! Ms. Marvel has had nothing but exciting transformations and evolutions lately in Marvel Comics canon, from Kamala Khan being named a mutant after years of being an Inhuman, to literally dying and coming back to life. But this new one is decidedly less exciting – in fact, it’s downright terrifying. Not only is the transformation Kamala is going through gross, but it’s possibly killing her. And that’s actually incredibly interesting, especially given her origin, as Marvel Comics is seemingly exploring an aspect of Ms. Marvel that’s greatly been ignored.

In a preview for Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #4 by Sabir Pirzada, Iman Vellani, and Scott Godlewski, Kamala Khan has been abducted by the Inhumans, as they hope to help her understand what is happening with her powers. In the last few issues, Kamala’s body has been spasming, which is exaggerated by her embiggen/stretchy powers. It’s as if Ms. Marvel is being stretched and crumbled simultaneously, and she has no idea why.

In the opening pages of this preview, Ms. Marvel’s powers are going especially haywire, and it’s causing her a great deal of pain. In fact, it’s confirmed in the narration boxes that Kamala’s condition is more than a trivial spasm (as she previously hoped), but it’s seemingly killing her. While it hasn’t yet been confirmed exactly how it’s killing her, or what’s even happening to her at all, the preview does touch on the potential reason, which could explore an aspect of Ms. Marvel’s recent mutant evolution that hasn’t been explained.

Ms. Marvel is a Mutant Exposed to the Terrigen Mist, Which Could Explain Her Power Spasms

Ms. Marvel getting her powers from the Terrigen Mist.

Kamala Khan was originally an Inhuman, whose latent powers were unlocked after her exposure to the Terrigen Mist. However, it’s later revealed that Kamala was a mutant since birth, despite the fact that her mutant powers never manifested. This means that Ms. Marvel is an Inhuman/mutant hybrid. However, that right there should give fans pause, as the Terrigen Mist is famously toxic for mutants, manifesting in a virus called M-Pox that oftentimes results in grisly death.

Obviously, Kamala’s dual heritage kept her from contracting M-Pox, saving her from a horrific fate. However, given the existence of her x-gene, it would make sense that the Terrigen Mist would have some impact, and that could be manifesting in these spasms that may result in her death. Has Ms. Marvel contracted a mutated strain of M-Pox? The preview does say that this “beautiful gift” given to her by the Terrigen Mist has become a curse, so it’s all-too possible.

Ms. Marvel’s Haywire Powers Could Be a New Beginning Rather than a Horrific End

Ms. Marvel's powers going haywire.

It’s hard to imagine that Ms. Marvel will be killed off so soon after her recent resurrection, especially given that she just became a mutant. Sure, it’s possible that Kamala is finally seeing the latent effects of Terrigen exposure, but it seems more likely that what fans are seeing right now is the final stage of her evolution. Her mutation never developed, while her Inhuman powers have been on display for years. Could these spasms be the violent introduction of her mutation? And if so, does this mean Ms. Marvel is about to get a new set of superpowers?

Right now, it’s impossible to know exactly what’s happening to Ms. Marvel, and how it will impact her Marvel Comics future, or end it in its tracks. All readers know is that she and the Inhumans are very concerned about this unarguably gross transformation, as they seem to believe Ms. Marvel’s powers are killing her – and they very well may be.
