The Japanese movie Godzilla Minus One is an exciting story with a great cast, elevating the viewing experience. Godzilla Minus One reimagines the original 1954 Godzilla while exploring post-World War II life in Japan. The story focuses on a kamikaze pilot who encounters Godzilla more than once. Despite primarily focusing on two characters, Toho’s movie asks major questions about the human experience.

The monster story provides a backdrop on which to explore what it means to be a person, individually and in a society. Godzilla Minus One brings up the responsibility that humans owe to each other, especially in relation to war and shared traumas. Godzilla Minus One‘s ending and heavy themes only work due to the incredible cast of mostly experienced actors who add depth to even the smallest roles.

Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima

Actor: Kamiki was born in Fujimi, Japan, and worked steadily from his first role all the way to his big break voicing Bo in Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away in 2001. The actor won Newcomer of the Year at the 29th Japan Academy Prize in 2005 for his first sole leading actor role in The Great Yokai War. Kamiki grew to international acclaim when he voiced the main character Taki Tachibana in the cast of the coming-of-age anime movie Your Name, one of the highest-grossing worldwide Japanese films.

Character: Kamiki plays the main protagonist Koichi Shikishima in Godzilla Minus One. Shikishima is a Japanese kamikaze pilot from World War II who had a previous interaction with Godzilla and gets pitted against the monster a second time. He’s in a relationship with Noriko Oishi and is the adopted father of Akiko.

Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi

Actor: Minami Hamabe was born in Ishikawa, Japan, and she got her big break when she won the New Generation Award at the Toho Cinderella Audition, one of Japan’s biggest actress auditions. Her first big role occurred when she played Meiko Honma in the 2015 TV show Anohana. Since then, her career has continued to grow, with her winning Newcomer of the Year at the 2018 Awards of the Japanese Academy for her role in Let Me Eat Your Pancreas.

Character: Hamabe plays Noriko Oishi, the deuteragonist of Godzilla Minus One. The character is the girlfriend of Shikishima and the mother of Akiko, who is present throughout Godzilla’s attack on Ginza. She is presumed dead throughout a decent portion of the movie.

Godzilla Minus One Supporting Cast & Characters

Yuki Yamada as Shirō Mizushima: Yamada plays Shirō Mizushima, one of the young crewmates on the Shinsei Maru. The actor was born in Nagoya, Japan, and he got his big break in 2011 playing Joe Gibken, aka Gokai Blue, in the Power Ranger series Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. The footage was used for the season Power Rangers Super Megaforce, the twenty-first season of the US Power Rangers show. This role is his best known alongside Godzilla Minus One.

Munetaka Aoki as Sōsaku Tachibana: Throughout Godzilla Minus One, Aoki plays Sōsaku Tachibana, a former navy technician. Munetaka Aoki was born in Yao, Osaka, Japan, on March 14, 1980, and he got his first role as Jun Nanami in the 2003 movie Battle Royale II. The actor got his big break in the 2006 action-drama movie Limit of Love: Umizaru. He is best known for acting in The Roundup: No Way Out, Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter Part I – The Final, and Rurouni Kenshin.

Tidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda: Actor Tidetaka Yoshioka plays Kenji Noda, a former weapons engineer, in Godzilla Minus One. Yoshioka was born in Saitama, Japan, on August 12, 1970, and he got his first role as Young Tatsuya in the 1977 horror movie Village of Eight Gravestones. He got his big break in the 1989 movie Otoko Wa Tsurai Yo: Boku no Ojisan. Yoshioka is best known for acting in Always: Sunset on Third Street, Always: Sunset on Third Street 2, and the Tora-san movies.

Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ōta: In Godzilla Minus One, Sakura Ando plays Shikishima’s neighbor, Sumiko Ōta. Ando was born in Tokyo, Japan, on February 19, 1986, and she got her first role as Satoko Kinoshita in a 2005 episode of True Horror Stories. She got her big break three years later as Koike in the action-comedy movie Love Exposure. In addition to this movie, Ando is best known for her role in Shoplifters and Monster.

Kuranosuke Sasaki as Yōji Akitsu: Sasaki plays Yōji Akitsu, the captain of the Shinsei Maru, throughout Godzilla Minus One. The actor was born in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, on February 4, 1968, and he got his first role on screen as Kotaro Miki in the 2000 to 2001 TV show Audrey. Kuranosuke Sasaki got his big break in 2006, playing Akinobu Mamiya in the movie Mamiya Kyodai. He is best known for his roles in Aircraft Carrier Ibuki, 20th Century Boys 1: Beginning of the End, and Mission Impossible: Samurai.

Sae Nagatani as Akiko: Young actress Sae Nagatani plays Akiko – the adopted daughter of Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe – in Godzilla Minus One. Nagatani is from Japan and got her first role in 2022 as an unnamed character in a 2022 episode of Shinso Wa Mimi No Naka. This is her only other role to date, but her performance as Akiko shows her potential as an up-and-coming actor.

Godzilla Minus One’s English Dub Voice Actors

There are many pros and cons to watching Godzilla Minus One dubbed versus subbed. The dubbed audio is available in sixteen different languages, making it extremely accessible to people who might not have the capacity or desire to read subtitles during a movie. Some viewers may also find it more beneficial to the viewing experience to hear the dialogue in a language that they speak.

Luckily for those who listen to the English dubbed version, there are many famous voices they may recognize, most notably Darren Barnet – an actor best known for appearing in Anyone But You, Love Hard, and the Netflix teen comedy series Never Have I Ever. Opposite Barnet, the multi-hyphenate star Ell voices Noriko Oishi. With these two at the center, the dubbed version of Godzilla Minus One is an enjoyable experience.
