Fallout 4 boasts an impressive array of merchants for the Sole Survivor to seek out, whether they are looking to buy or sell items. To get the best items or prices, it’s important to know who and where the best merchants are in the game. From much-needed ammo and material shipments to unique armor and weapons, there are some great things to be purchased in the Commonwealth if the right person is spoken to.

Fallout 4 and its DLCs have tons of locations for the Sole Survivor to explore, some of which will have merchants that can be traded with. While many will offer generic items, there are a few scattered throughout the game that have something a little special, often in the form of unique and rare items. Although some of their inventory isn’t cheap and might require some saving, each of these merchants are worth visiting at least once for their stock.

Mitch – Last Plank, Far Harbor

Largest Cap Pool To Barter With

Mitch is a bartender who owns the Last Plank, the only bar in Far Harbor where the Sole Survivor can first encounter the Fallout 4 companion Old Longfellow. While on the surface Mitch appears to be an upbeat guy, poking around behind the counter will reveal a letter that Mitch has written in case of his death. In it, Mitch tells the reader to run because the island is cursed and to spread word of that.

As a merchant, Mitch’s stock isn’t extensive, with standard aid items, Vim, and a rented bed at the Last Plank on offer. He is also one of only five merchants to sell shipments of glass used for crafting, such as in scopes and Syringer ammo. However, Mitch is a great merchant to sell to, as he has the largest pool of caps in Fallout 4 with 974 available to buy whatever the Sole Survivor has, making any trip to see him worth it.

9

Brooks – Bait Shop, Far Harbor

Only Place To Get Unique Recon Marine Armor

Staying on the island and in the settlement of Far Harbor, the Sole Survivor can meet Brooks. Brooks is an escaped Institute synth who welcomes new arrivals to the island before directing them to Arcadia as well as running the Bait Shop. Brooks has the second-largest pool of caps in Fallout 4 with 720 available to barter with and sells a variety of weapons, clothes, aid, junk, and ammo.

Brooks is worth a visit for two reasons, the first of which is he is the only merchant in the game to accept charge cards bought from Parker Quinn and will redeem them for the full 100 caps. The second is a unique legendary Recon Marine Helmet, a piece of the marine Recon armor set found in the DLC. This helmet has the Cunning effect with grants plus-one to Agility and Perception and will cost around 10,000 caps from Brooks.

Smiling Larry – Random Encounter

Purchase Unique Melee Weapon

Smiling Larry is a traveling merchant who can be randomly encountered in the Commonwealth. Usually found on the road with a brahmin and caravan guards, Larry can be recruited as a unique settler and level four weapons merchant by inviting him to join a settlement. Larry can only be sent to settlements that have a population over 30, are linked with at least one other via a trade route, and have an open weapons emporium.

If traded with on the road, Larry will sell a mixture of weapons, junk, and ammo and usually has around 350–360 caps to trade with. However, if successfully recruited, Larry will sell the unique version of the Ripper chainsaw melee weapon called Reckoning. Reckoning is a very fast weapon and has the Sentinel’s effect, which means that the wielder will take 15% less damage when standing still.

The Scribe – Random Encounter

Great Armor Pieces If Recruited

Just like Smiling Larry, The Scribe is a merchant who can be randomly encountered traveling the Commonwealth’s roads. The Scribe is a former Brotherhood of Steel scribe who left the faction’s Capital Wasteland chapter once Elder Maxson took over. After traveling for a few years, the Scribe decided to become an armor merchant and, if traded with, will have average tier armor with a handful of mods.

However, if recruited to a settlement with a population over 10 and an open armor emporium, the Scribe will sell some unique pieces. It is possible to find the Mark 4 synth left leg armor piece, which has plus-two Luck, as well as the Mark 4 synth chest which comes with the Chameleon effect to improve sneaking. The Scribe also sells the Apocalypse armor chest piece with the Martyr effect, that slows time when the wearer is below 20% health.

6

Arturo Rodriguez – Diamond City Market

Great Early Game Supplier

Arturo Rodriguez is one of the first weapons merchants the Sole Survivor will meet during a new Fallout 4 playthrough and can be found from 8am–8pm at his shop in Diamond City. Arturo sells a range of weapons and ammo as well as power armor frames and has an average number of caps to barter with at 345. Arturo is also a great source of material shipments for building, and will stock aluminum, copper, gears, and screws.

Arturo also sells two special custom weapons, with the Big Boy, which costs around 14,000, and Old Faithful available for 3,000 caps. Old Faithful is a laser pistol that will deal double damage when the target is at full health. Meanwhile, Big Boy is a unique Fat Man that shoots an additional mini nuke each time it’s fired.

5

Vault-Tec Rep – Hotel Rexford, Goodneighbor

Upgrade A Settlement’s General Store

Knocking on the Sole Survivor’s door at the start of every playthrough is the Vault-Tec Rep, who is left at the gate to Vault 111 once the world starts ending. However, when visiting the Hotel Rexford in Goodneighbor, it’s possible to bump into this familiar face 210 years later, except he doesn’t look exactly the same. The ghoulified Vault-Tec Rep will at first be upset with the Sole Survivor for getting to the future the easy way, but can be cheered up with an invitation to live in Sanctuary.

As a settler, the Rep can be assigned to any position, but it is often best to assign him to the general store if there is an open trading emporium. The Rep will become a level four merchant and sell rare junk items like military grade duct tape as well as the unique armor piece the Apocalypse left greave. This leg armor comes with the Bolstering effect to increase energy and damage resistance the lower the wearer’s health is.

4

Cricket – Traveling & Bunker Hill

Wandering Arms Dealer & Institute Snitch

Cricket is a traveling merchant who can often be found on the roads of the Commonwealth. Unlike the Scribe and Smiling Larry, Cricket is not a random encounter and instead follows a few different routes as she moves between settlements. Each trip will pass through set locations where she will stop for eight in-game hours, such as outside Diamond City, outside Vault 81 and at the Warwick homestead.

When not traveling, Cricket will be at Bunker Hill running her weapons stand where she will sell weapons, ammo, armor, and junk. Cricket is a great source of lead, silver, springs, and gears shipments, but she is worth tracking down for the legendary weapon on offer. Cricket sells the legendary submachine gun Spray n’ Pray, which does an extra 15 points of damage with each bullet as it explodes on impact.

3

Proctor Teagan – Prydwen

Good Variety Of Unique Items

Those that join the Brotherhood of Steel can trade with the faction’s quartermaster, Proctor Teagan. Teagan can be found on board the Prydwen on the main deck towards the back, locked in a caged area. As well as selling material shipments including circuitry and ballistic fiber, Teagan is also the only merchant in Fallout 4 to sell mods for the gatling laser, missile launcher, minigun, and laser weapons.

She also offers material shipments including some of the rarer materials, such as ballistic fiber, fiber optics, and is one of only two merchants in Fallout 4 to sell shipments of nuclear material.

Alexis also has several parts of both the Destroyer’s armor and the Overseer’s armor sets. Despite saying that she sells no weapons, Alexis sells the Overseer’s Guardian, a unique combat rifle which shoots an additional bullet with each shot. Alexis will give the Sole Survivor a 10% discount if Austin is saved during the must-finish side quest “Hole in the Wall,” which stacks with other discounts from perks.

KL-E-O – Goodneighbor

Everything For Hot & Cold Blooded Murder

Finally, there is KL-E-O, the feisty assaultron who runs the weapons shop located in Goodneighbor, immediately opposite the main entrance to the settlement. KL-E-O is a delight to talk to with her dark humor and flirtatious banter, making every trip to see her a lot of fun. Hacking her terminal, though, will reveal she has a detailed plan for how to kill every prominent member of Goodneighbor.

KL-E-O sells a fantastic range of weapons, armor, ammo, and junk, as well as shipments including ballistic fiber, copper, and oil. KL-E-O also offers some great unique Fallout 4 pieces, including both known pieces of the Devastator’s armor set.
