What Happened in Go! Go! Loser Ranger! Episode #8?

Produced by Yostar Pictures; Directed by Takahiro Kaneko & Tatsuya Nokimori

In Go! Go! Loser Ranger! episode #8, “Shout Out Loud, Cadets!”, it’s revealed that one of D’s teammates, Ranmaru, rigged one of the alarms to go off early, so the second day of the Bailong Exams wasn’t over yet. D took advantage of the confusion to steal back the yellow key, and while they cut things close, D’s team successfully held on to the yellow key until the end of the second day.

After the exam, Ranmaru told everyone about how he had discovered a secret, powerful form for their gadgets called Burst Mode, and they could use it to give themselves an advantage over the other team on the last day. Feeling confident in himself for the first time in his life, Ranmaru then went off to officially break ties with Urabe, only to accidentally run into Peltrola in the middle of killing Aizome. Ranmaru sacrificed himself to let Aizome escape, and while Peltrola went off to heal his injuries, XX disguised herself as Ranmaru and infiltrated the Bailong Exam.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the final day of the Bailong Exam still went on, and the teams decided to settle things with one-on-one matches. D quickly gained an advantage over Shion thanks to Burst Mode, and even though he found himself relating to Shion due to his hatred of the Ranger Force over how they treated his brother, he kept fighting him for the key. Just as it seemed like D would win, though, Shion accidentally put his gadget into Burst Mode during a fit of rage, and now they were fighting on equal footing.

Go! Go! Loser Ranger! Episode #8 Excellently Fleshes Out D’s Character

The Anime’s Unique Protagonist Keeps Getting More Complex

D in episode 8

One of the best parts about Go! Go! Loser Ranger! episode #8 was the way it fleshed out D’s character. For most of the series, D had been arrogant and all-around dismissive of humans, as a whole, but D’s reaction when he realized that he and Shion were alike in their hatred of the Ranger Force shows that D isn’t completely incapable of sympathizing with humans when sympathy might be warranted. That adds a lot more to his character compared to earlier episodes, and it will be great to see how that develops in future episodes of the anime.

The Side Characters Shine in Go! Go! Loser Ranger Episode #8

The Series’ Large Cast Gets Some Exposure

D's team in episode 8

The best part about Go! Go! Loser Ranger! episode #8 is that it finally starts doing something with the side characters. Not only is Shion’s character developed even further to the point that D begins to empathize with him, but D’s team, as a whole, was finally given meaningful character work, whether it’s through things like Angel’s assertiveness, Shippou’s goofiness, or Yamato being far braver and more loyal than previous episodes let on. It still isn’t perfect, but it now feels like Go! Go! Loser Ranger! is working with a genuine ensemble cast as opposed to being just about D.

Junior First Rank Ranger Aizome was another great highlight of episode #8. Earlier episodes had already implied that Aizome was much more powerful than her cutesy and childish appearance suggested, and between Aizome severely wounding the boss monster Peltrola despite not being a Dragon Keeper and her determination in the face of death, that was all perfectly paid off. Aizome’s bound to stay involved with the rest of the arc, and whatever she does when she returns is sure to be great to see.

Go! Go! Loser Ranger! has turned heads and captured the imagination of Power Rangers fans with a surprising dark edge similar to The Boys.

The biggest highlight of episode #8, however, was undoubtedly Ranmaru. Out of everyone on D’s team, Ranmaru received the most development with the exploration of his mechanical skills, his newfound desire to follow his dreams, and, most notably, his determination to stand up to an impossibly powerful foe like Peltrola. Ranmaru very quickly became one of the most endearing characters in the anime, thus making Ranmaru’s death and subsequent replacement by XX hit all the harder, and with that sort of writing, there’s plenty to be excited about with the rest of the Go! Go! Loser Ranger! anime.
