After a solid seven seasons, Station 19 drew to a close with its 105th episode, the aptly titled “One Last Time.” As established in Station 19 season 7, episode 9, the series finale saw 19’s firefighters banding together against a fast-spreading wildfire that threatened the Seattle area. The natural disaster cropped up in the Grey’s Anatomy season 20 finale too, as Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s surgeons scrambled to help those impacted by smoke and fire damage. Given that Station 19 is a Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, the synergy between the shows was an exciting way to conclude Station 19.

Notably, Station 19‘s backdoor pilot unfolded in Grey’s Anatomy season 14, episode 13. In the exciting installment, Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) meets firefighter Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz). Over the course of its 7-season run, Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy‘s crossover episodes changed the shows’ trajectories, especially where characters like Ben Warren (Jason George) and Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) are concerned. One of Grey’s Anatomy‘s best couples, Ben and Miranda make a huge decision and adopt the late firefighter Dean Miller’s daughter, Pru. Satisfyingly, that plot point comes full-circle in the Station 19 series finale.

The Show’s Flash Forward Confirms That Pru Carries On Dean’s Legacy

Played by Janai Kaylani in Station 19 seasons 3–7, Pruitt Arike Miller-Warren is the daughter of two of the spin-off’s characters, Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan) and JJ Lau (Brenda Song), who have a brief fling. After realizing she’s pregnant, JJ stays on Dean’s houseboat, which leads to her dramatic fire station labor scene. At nearly a week old, a young Pru still doesn’t have a name, with her biological parents arguing over how best to care for her. Ultimately, a few days into motherhood, JJ packs up and leaves the baby with Dean.

After Station 19‘s Dean tragically dies, Andy takes Pru to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to be cared for by Ben, who had agreed to look after Pru if anything happened to Dean. Although it takes a little time, especially with all the legal red tape, Ben Warren and Miranda Bailey adopt Pru, who becomes a key part of stories in both Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy. In Station 19‘s flash forwards, it’s revealed that an adult Pru graduates from the Seattle fire academy and lands a job at Station 19 under the leadership of Captain Maya Bishop (Danielle Savre).

Instead Of Pursuing Surgery, Pru Miller-Warren Follows In Dean & Ben’s Firefighter Footsteps

Ever-charming and passionate, Dean Miller was cut from a selfless, heroic mold, which made him a top-notch firefighter and father. Toward the end of his time on Station 19, Dean’s Crisis One program becomes a huge success, prompting him to reach out to other fire departments across the country with the hope of creating a national program. Just before he moves to Oakland with Pru, Dean responds to a dangerous call. After a gas build-up inside a house explodes, Dean is left in critical condition, and dies en route to Grey Sloan.

With Dean’s shocking death straddling both Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy episodes, it had a huge impact on both shows. Not to mention, in the immediate aftermath of Dean’s death, Ben and Bailey grapple with whether to officially adopt Pru. The reveal in Station 19 season 7’s ending that Pru has followed in both Dean and Ben’s footsteps is a lovely full-circle moment for the show at large. Although Station 19 just gives a glimpse into the very start of Pru’s firefighter career, the scene helps cement Dean’s legacy and provides an unexpected bit of closure.
