Despite having signed a peace treaty, the two nations are constantly looking for excuses to draw their weapons once again against each other. It is almost as if these countries could never coexist.

Yet, chapter #98 of the manga could have hinted at these two bitter enemy nations once being the same country, later split in two. Westalis and Ostania could have been the same in the past. This means that, by the end of the series, the two nations could unify once again, bringing an end to their rivalry.

The Two Rival Countries Could Become Unified Once Again

Shortly after returning to Eden Academy to work as a teacher, Master Henderson met with his old friend Martha. As they speak about their lives, a radio can be seen in the background, with the host commenting about the state of the ongoing war between Ostania and Westalis. At one point, the man mentions that the war between these two nations has the objective of unifying the territory and wiping out the citizens of their western neighbors. These declarations become even more relevant when thinking about the fact that these fictional countries are based on Cold War Germany.

During this time, the German territory was divided due to the influence of the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. In the panel, the voice on the radio speaks of a “war of unification”, not “conquest”. With this choice of words, Endo could be implying that Ostania and Westalis used to be a single country, one later divided by their opposing ideologies. This would explain why the two nations seem to have such a burning hatred for each other. Opposite political systems tend to clash when forced to coexist.

If Westalis and Ostania were indeed a single nation at one point, they could likely one day unite under peaceful terms once again. This would concur with the events that transpired in Germany during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall, the line that divided Eastern and Western Germany, was destroyed on November 9, 1989. After the structure was taken down, Germany became a single nation once again. A similar occurrence could happen in the world of Spy X Family, putting an end to the conflict between the nations and creating a world where no children have to suffer as Loid did in the past.

Westalis and Ostania Unifying Could Be the Answer to Loid and Yor’s Dilemma

With Their Nations at Peace, They Could Finally Become a Real Family

Although Loid and Yor seem to have a peaceful and often wholesome fake relationship, fans of the series are afraid of what could occur to them towards the end. Agent Twilight’s status as a Westalis spy makes him an enemy of the Garden, the secret Ostanian organization of which Yor is a member. If either of them finds out about the other’s secret, there could be a violent and tragic confrontation. This devastating conclusion could be avoided if Ostania and Westalis become a single nation. The animosity between their organizations would be put to rest.

Since Loid would no longer be considered an enemy of the state, his job as a spy would no longer make him Yor’s adversary. With their new home country at peace, even if their identities were revealed, they would have no motives to try and kill the other. The looming confrontation between these two beloved characters would not have to take place, allowing Loid and Yor to build a real relationship. This would also greatly benefit Anya, who has been worried about her family’s future for many chapters.

A unified nation would mean that Agent Twilight’s eternal mission to maintain the peace between Ostania and Westalis would finally be over. The young man would have no motive to leave the Forger Family behind, giving his young daughter a true home. Loid and Yor could join their new nation’s Secret Service, still working to maintain peace without having to hide secrets from their loved ones. Not only would this conclusion be one fans of Endo’s work would love, but it would also be in line with the series’ themes of found family.

The unification between Westalis and Ostania could be the key to giving Spy x Family the happy ending followers of Endo’s work expect. This conclusion is likely to become a reality if the events of the series continue being inspired by Germany’s history. Ending his series, which revolves around the horrors of war and the trauma caused by military conflict, in such a wholesome manner could be what Endo intended from the beginning.
