Stephanie Brown has had a few hero identities under her belt, such as Robin, Spoiler, and even Batgirl. But juggling all three of these identities over her character history has resulted in her never getting an alias of her own — even though DC already gave her the perfect one in a strange alternate universe from the New 52.

In Batgirl #27 by Gail Simone and Robert Gill, readers are shown an alternate version of Gotham City created by Scarecrow’s mass hallucination scheme. In this world, many characters have brand-new identities, with Barbara Gordon being Bluebelle instead of Batgirl and allying herself with a young woman in purple. Despite being named “Charise Carnes,” between the purple costume and the “spoiled” reference, this alternate-universe character is clearly meant to be a take on Stephanie Brown — who gets her perfect new alias as Daybreak.

Instead of being Spoiler or Batgirl in this hallucination, this blonde character has the perfect name of Daybreak. She and Barbara Gordon seem to prioritize fighting crime in the middle of the day now, and the Daybreak name is the perfect new identity for her that would allow Stephanie Brown to step away from being Spoiler or Batgirl.

Bluebelle And Daybreak Off To Fight Crime Together

Stephanie Brown has been both Batgirl and Robin in addition to her own original identity as Spoiler. Steph has had more vigilante identities than anyone else in the Bat-Family, and yet she’s never really been allowed to keep any of them. Every time it seems that Stephanie is about to evolve her identity, she gets stuffed back into a previous role. She went from Spoiler, to Robin, to Batgirl, back to Spoiler, then Batgirl again. Every other Robin has been allowed to experiment with their identity, sometimes to great success, as seen with Dick Grayson’s transition from Robin to Nightwing.

Stephanie deserves the chance to transition into her own identity as well. Both Robin and Batgirl are legacy mantles, and if she’s no longer going to use her original identity as Spoiler, then there’s no reason she couldn’t use the identity of Daybreak, as it perfectly fits her personality. Out of all the Bat-Family members, Stephanie tends to be the most upbeat and cheerful. Stephanie also wasn’t motivated to be a hero due to any personal tragedy, but simply tried to end her father’s super-villain schemes as Cluemaster. The identity of Daybreak is a perfect name for the type of hope and optimism that she represents.

Every Robin has at one point or another managed to evolve out of their original role. Dick became Nightwing, Jason became Red Hood, Tim became Red Robin, and there’s no doubt that Damian will eventually take on his own identity as well. But Stephanie Brown has simply never been afforded this opportunity. Instead, after being essentially erased as Robin, she’s been saddled with the legacy mantle of Batgirl, which she shares with Cassandra Cain, when Stephanie Brown could be so much more as Daybreak.
