Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #1-7!The Justice League’s epic crossover with the MonsterVerse has come to a close, but should it be the last time these two properties ever get together? If there’s one thing Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong showed, it’s that bringing DC’s icons and the Titans together is too good of an idea to only use once.

Over seven issues, the Justice League slugged it out with some of the most powerful monsters featured in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Between shocking losses, surprising upgrades, and even jaw-dropping deaths, this series was full of amazing moments. If there’s one thing the crossover proved, it’s that the world needs more of Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong is an Absolute Thrill Ride

The DC Universe and the Monsterverse collide when the Legion of Doom invades the Fortress of Solitude to steal a Mother Box and Orion’s Astro-Harness. However, the Toyman steals the Dreamstone, sending a warning to the Justice League. Amid the ensuing fight between heroes and villains, the Legion is transported to the MonsterVerse where they discover Skull Island and the Titans. Sensing the kaiju’s power, Toyman uses the Dreamstone to wish them all to the DC Universe to destroy the Justice League once and for all.

Toyman’s plan works as the DC Universe is quickly overwhelmed by the Titans’ presence. DC’s most iconic locations are attacked by Titans like Scylla, Behemoth, and, of course, Godzilla. The King of the Monsters attacks Superman and shockingly defeats the Man of Steel with a blast of atomic breath. With Superman in intensive care, the rest of DC’s heroes work round the clock to keep the Titans from wrecking the world. Unfortunately, Lex Luthor revives Mechagodzilla and uses the weapon to corral the Titans for a final assault in Metropolis.

The Justice League forges an alliance with Kong to fight Mechagodzilla, the Titans, and a revived Skull Devil. In Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #7 by Brian Buccellato, Christian Duce, and Tom Derenick, Superman recovers and joins the fight, along with Godzilla. Thanks to Superman and Godzilla the battle wraps up in a matter of seconds. Superman recovers the Dreamstone and sends the Titans back to their universe while the League apprehends Lex Luthor. With the DC Universe saved, Superman and Lois get back to celebrating their engagement and discuss where they should spend their honeymoon.

The Justice League’s Crossover Had a Lot of Highs with Very Few Lows

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong starts off a bit slow in its first issue. But that’s only to get readers set up for the humongous events that follow in the series’ next six issues. The next several issues feature plenty of battles between DC icons and famous movie kaiju. Whether it’s the Bat-Family teaming together to stop Camazotz or Aquaman unleashing a Kraken to interrupt a fight between Godzilla and Tiamat, the crossover has so many great fight sequences and moments.

That being said, the series isn’t perfect. While large of the story sees the Justice League reacting to and responding to the threat Godzilla presents, Kong doesn’t play as big a role as one would think. Admittedly, he does get some interesting moments throughout the story and interacts with characters like Supergirl and Green Arrow. But Kong’s role in the story doesn’t feel as substantial as Godzilla’s. There’s also the perplexing role Ra’s al Ghul plays in reviving the Skull Devil, though it’s never quite explained why or what his end game is.

All that said, this story utilizes the mythology and lore of the DC Universe and the MonsterVerse to create an amazing narrative that combines both. Whether it’s seeing Superman discovering how his heat vision compares to Godzilla’s atomic breath or Kong temporarily becoming a Green Lantern to take down the Skull Devil, this comic has so many moments that are worthy of being in a big-budget film. But as great as this story was, it only scratched the surface of both the MonsterVerse and the DCU and left so much open to explore.

A Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong Sequel Could Have More Exciting Opportunities

Superman and Lois Talk about the Future DC

The crossover ends pretty definitively. The Legion of Doom is defeated, the Titans are returned to the MonsterVerse, and the Justice League gets back to their normal lives. But it wouldn’t take much to bring DC’s heroes back together with Kong and Godzilla. Magic is one potential avenue, and the DC Universe has no shortage of enchanted heroes or villains who could cross the multiversal boundary to reach the MonsterVerse. In fact, a sequel could focus on DC’s magic-users who didn’t appear during Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong.

Speaking of underused characters, a sequel could put a focus on characters who didn’t play a huge role in the original crossover, or even those who didn’t appear at all. Despite how big a role they play in Godzilla’s canon, neither Mothra nor Rodan showed up, making them prime candidates for a sequel (just imagine how cool it’d be to see Wonder Woman riding Mothra into battle). A crossover could also be a chance to explore some underrated DC heroes interacting with the Titans. Animal Man, for example, would have a field day taking on kaiju powers.

Of course, a story shouldn’t just be made for the sake of making it, but a sequel could explore some of the plot threads from Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong. This story teased the idea of Superman and Lois going somewhere nice for their honeymoon, so why not take the unexpected route and have the two end up on Skull Island? A sequel could also explore how the Green Lanterns move on after the sudden death of Guy Gardner. There are plenty of directions this story could go if DC and Legendary decided to make a sequel.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 Could Be Even Better Than the First

Godzilla and Kong Going Back to the MonsterVerse DC

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong was a crowd-pleaser that stuck the landing and if it’s all that DC and Legendary would like to do, that’s perfectly fine. But there’s so much more that this crossover could do. It’d be a shame to end this franchise with just one entry before other DC heroes have a chance to fight or team up with other Titans (especially as the MonsterVerse continues to introduce creative new kaiju like Shimo or Suko). Hopefully, this isn’t the end and fans will one day see more of the Justice League interacting with the MonsterVerse.
