Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys just got a lot bigger with the announcement of a spinoff, The Boys: Mexico, and exciting updates are already pouring in. Debuting on the streaming platform in 2019, and based on the comic book series of the same name, The Boys is set in a universe where superheroes are as common as celebrities, and not all of them use their powers for good. With its biting satire and deconstruction of the superhero genre, The Boys hooked audiences from day one with its humor and shocking violence.

It didn’t take long for the main series to be followed by an animated spinoff called The Boys Presents: Diabolical in 2022, and a live-action off-shoot debuted in 2023 called Gen V. As superhero content continues to inundate movie theaters and clog up streaming services, The Boys universe becomes more and more vital because it offers an alternative that challenges the viewer’s expectations. Now, Amazon Prime Video’s big hit is getting even bigger with the announcement of another spinoff, The Boys: Mexico.

Nearly six months after the project was announced, the latest news comes in the form of a development update on The Boys: Mexico. In a recent interview, showrunner Eric Kripke offered a somewhat disheartening update when he mentioned that the development of the spinoff is moving slowly. According to Kripke, a deal is still in the works to assign a writer for the pilot which implies nothing has been written yet. Despite the slow progress, Kripke’s announcement assures fans that work is still being done, even if The Boys: Mexico is a long way off.

Read Kripke’s full statement below:

“They are still making the deal with the writer for the pilot. He has an amazing pitch, and we all giggle and think about how fun it would be. But there are a lot of hurdles for that show before it’s a real show. He’s got to write an amazing pilot, he’s probably got to write an amazing episode 2. I think he can and he will, but we’re a while away from truly starting to drop in the Easter eggs and the setups and stuff.”

The Boys: Mexico Is Confirmed

Another Superhero Spinoff Is On The Way

The Boys: Mexico was officially announced in late November 2023 following the overwhelming success of the first The Boys live-action spinoff, Gen V. It is unclear how The Boys: Mexico will fit into the world of the titular flagship series, but if it is anything like Gen V, it will be intricately tied into the lore of the original. Besides the producing team behind the main The Boys series, The Boys: Mexico will also be executive produced by actors Diego Luna (Andor) and Gael García Bernal (Werewolf By Night). The series is currently in development, meaning it will be a while before it debuts.

Who Is Involved In The Boys: Mexico?

Diego Luna & Gael García Bernal Will Produce

The Boys: Mexico already has a star-studded lineup of behind-the-scenes personnel announced, and it was revealed that both Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal would be serving as executive producers on the project. The noted Mexican actors will not only be representing their home nation behind the camera, but they are also currently contemplating taking small on-screen roles in the spinoff. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has been announced as a writer for the series, and he most recently made a name for himself penning the Blue Beetle film.

For a bit of continuity, The Boys: Mexico will also see Eric Kripke and Seth Rogen working in a creative capacity, which guarantees the spinoff will have the same vulgar and violent flavor as the original. With little revealed yet, nothing has been announced regarding casting, and it is unclear who will direct episodes of the upcoming series.

At this point, it is unknown if The Boys: Mexico will be a standalone offshoot, or if it will directly tie back to The Boys and Gen V. Considering the fact that none of the other spinoffs have stood on their own, Mexico will probably be another intricate piece of The Boys lore. Gen V had cameos from The Boys characters, and it is highly likely that Mexico would be the same.

Since the main series is set in the U.S., it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to imagine the American supes could make a quick trip down to Mexico, and vice versa. The most obvious link that could bring The Boys: Mexico into the main series’ lore is Vought International, the corporation that has been leveraging its superheroes as political power. Since Vought has gone international, the evil conglomerate could easily have a presence in Mexico as well.
