Plenty of Below Deck crew members who’ve been on the show have massive egos. Reality stars garner large egos, inflated by the press and the attention surrounding their shows. Below Deck often features a rotating cast, meaning individuals have one chance to make a good impression on the audience. This can lead to crew members acting out of character and putting on for the cameras. There were plenty of crew members from Below Deck season 11 who demonstrated villainous behavior that stirred up drama for the show.

There have been so many personalities featured in the Below Deck franchise. Some have been deemed fan-favorite crew members who return for multiple appearances. Aesha Scott is one of those beloved personalities, ranking as one of the best Below Deck chief stews ever. The crew, captains, and audience take a liking to some crew over others. Sometimes, when a Below Deck star starts getting a little attention, it can all go to their head and, in return, their egos.

Captain Sandy Yawn

Below Deck Mediterranean Seasons 2-9

Captain Sandy Yawn has been the resident captain on Below Deck Mediterranean since season 2 of the spin-off series. She’s known for her no-nonsense attitude that some think makes her the best Below Deck captain of the franchise. On the contrary, Captain Sandy has had to make some tough, controversial decisions throughout the years. She is not afraid to exert her power as captain, which can intimidate her crew. Captain Sandy has the experience to be a little bit egotistical, and Below Deck Med wouldn’t be the same without her.

9

João Franco

Below Deck Mediterranean Seasons 3 & 4, Below Deck Down Under Season 2

João Franco’s behavior during Below Deck Med season 3 was entirely unacceptable. He’s so egotistical he self-named his alter-ego, Jezabob, who would come out in his worst moments. João channeled Jezabob when he was drinking. When he was drunk, he degraded many of his fellow women crew members and got rather aggressive. João called Aesha a “Russian prostitute” and broke a glass in his hands one night when the crew was out. He changed his ways in Below Deck Med season 4, but his ego was only inflated more when Captain Sandy promoted him to bosun.

8

Rachel Hargrove

Below Deck Seasons 8-10

Despite having somewhat of an ego, Chef Rachel Hargrove is still one of the best Below Deck chefs. She was the chef during Below Deck seasons 8-10 and was beloved for her impeccable cooking skills. At times, Chef Rachel could be dismissive when given requests. During Below Deck season 8, she fled the yacht when she didn’t want to make what the guests wanted for dinner. He was asked on three separate occasions not to cook onions but did so anyway. Chef Adam thought that he knew best and continued to include onions in their food despite being asked not to.

6

Leon Walker

Below Deck Season 3

Chef Leon Walker had an abundance of talent during Below Deck season 3. However, where he faulted was his ability to apply critique. Chef Leon butted heads with Chief Stew Kate Chastain throughout his time on the season. He was unwilling to adjust his dishes and to cook what the charter guests had requested during Below Deck season 3. Chef Leon was eventually fired for starting a fire in the galley due to his uncleanliness. The fire was preventable, but he was very stubborn and didn’t take any advice from his fellow crew members.

5

Ben Willoughby

Below Deck Seasons 10 & 11

Ben Willoughby’s ego was out of control in Below Deck season 11. He went into the charter season with one year under his bet, having appeared on Below Deck season 10 the year prior. Heading into the new season, Ben wanted to be hired by Captain Kerry Titheradge as the St. David’s Bosun. He told Us Weekly it felt like he was “taking a step down” by joining as a deckhand. Ben was upset Jared Woodin got the job instead of him and was critical of his performance as bosun during the start of the charter season.

However, Jared was fired, Ben took over his role, and Ben was overjoyed. His ego was displayed again throughout the season in his boatmance with Sunny Marquis. Ben strung her along and was ambiguous about the state of their relationship. During one charter, he posted on Instagram that he wasn’t over his ex, Camille Lamb, while he was still hooking up with Sunny. Ben thought that he could have his cake and eat it too. He was rather power-hungry during Below Deck season 11.

Tom Checketts

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5

Chef Tom Checketts joined Below Deck Med season 5 late as the replacement for Chef Hindrigo “Kiko” Lorran. He wasn’t expecting to join the season but stepped in as requested by his then-girlfriend and fellow crew member Malia White. Chef Tom was a little unprepared heading into the season, but he did a great job as a chef. He bragged about working with Gordon Ramsay to his crew members and said his mother had cooked for Queen Elizabeth. Tom was one of the most unhinged chefs from the Below Deck franchise.

3

Eddie Lucas

Below Deck Seasons 1-3, 8-9

Eddie Lucas was full of himself during his multiple seasons of Below Deck. He went as far as to cheat on his then-girlfriend during Below Deck season 3 with stewardess Rocky Dakota. Eddie thought he had everything under control and hid their boatmance from the crew. He thought he was cool enough to have two girlfriends but forgot that his then-girlfriend would see all the footage of his affair on TV. On Below Deck season 9, he also didn’t do anything when Rayna Lindsey told him that Heather Chase said a racial slur in front of her.

2

Gary King

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Seasons 2-5

Gary King is a controversial crew member on Below Deck Sailing Yacht. He’s been involved in many boatmances over his tenure on the series. His ability to swoon over women has likely boosted his ego. However, the fans think Gary is very problematic because of his behavior on the show. He’s had serious allegations made about him by the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 makeup artist Samantha Suarez. Per Rolling Stone, she alleged Gary grabbed and restrained her one night when he was drunk. Samantha reported this to Below Deck production, and no further action was taken.

1

Ryan McKeown

Below Deck Down Under Season 1

Chef Ryan McKeown thought he was better than everyone on Below Deck Down Under season 2. Throughout the season, he was disrespectful to those around him. Chef Ryan took things a little too far when he was rude to his captain and didn’t greet guests when they boarded the superyacht. He had a negative attitude that seeped into his performance as a chef. Captain Jason Chambers ended up firing him, which was the best decision for the rest of the crew.

There have been many Below Deck stars with huge egos across the franchise. It can be exciting for the yachties when they make it onto the show. However, it can get to their heads, leading them to act outrageous and out of character.
