Warning! Spoilers ahead for the endings of Dune: Part Two and Oppenheimer.
Dune: Part Two gets a new Oppenheimer-style ending in which Paul Atreides becomes emperor. Picking up after the cliffhanger ending of his 2021 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s hit sequel continues the story of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul as he faces off against the Harkonnens on Arrakis. The Dune: Part Two ending sees Paul finally defeat the evil Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) and ascend to the throne in a violent takeover.
A new video shared by mac on X, formerly Twitter, reimagines the Dune: Part Two ending with the Oppenheimer score and some key changes. Check out the video below:
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer memorably ends with Cillian Murphy’s titular lead character envisioning a future in which his creation is used to destroy the world, and this recut of the Dune: Part Two ending features Paul also having a vision, though his is of him and Chani (Zendaya) seemingly conquering the universe. The new version of the ending features Ludwig Göransson’s score for Nolan’s film playing over the top, adding to the epic tone.
Dune: Part Two’s Ending Sets Up A Dark Future For Paul
There’s One Key Difference Between Paul Atreides & Oppenheimer
Paul may have started with honorable intentions and was adamant that he wouldn’t let his visions of mass intergalactic genocide come true, but he does eventually end up embracing this more sinister future for himself. Rallying the Fremen behind him with his status as the Lisan al Gaib, Paul concludes the sequel by taking his war to Dune‘s other Great Houses who oppose his rule. He also demands marriage to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) as a means of solidifying his claim to the throne.
Dune: Part Three has now been confirmed, meaning Paul’s story will eventually continue. Villeneuve’s first two movies adapt Herbert’s first book in the series, but the third installment would seemingly be adapting the events of the author’s follow-up novel, Dune: Messiah. Without delving too far into spoilers from the source material, this book explores the dangers of messiah figures and the universe-altering consequences of Paul’s bloody Holy War.

While Oppenheimer‘s vision of humanity destroying itself due to his creation hasn’t yet come true, Paul’s choices at the end of Dune: Part Two set into motion his own visions of mass death and destruction coming to pass. There are certainly some similarities between the characters of Oppenheimer and Paul, but the former is very much a man riddled with guilt over his own creation, while the latter essentially becomes a tyrant. While many questions remain about the future of Paul’s journey, but Dune: Part Two teases that dark days are ahead.
