On July 24, 2024, Captain America #11 by J. Michael Straczynski and Jesús Saíz will feature David Nakayama’s Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe variant cover. This cover is one of many variants paying tribute to the iconic Deadpool comic of the same name.
The variant cover series will spotlight the industry’s top talents and be featured across Marvel’s hottest titles throughout July. Fans can expect Deadpool-levels of violence depicted across the various titles as the Merc with a Mouth slices and dices his way through the Marvel Universe, targeting fan-favorite characters.

David Nakayama’s Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe variant cover is pure, unadulterated genius, depicting Deadpool alongside Steve Rogers in nearly matching Captain America suits. While Steve dons his classic costume, Wade’s patriotic ensemble features a unique Deadpool twist that makes it perfect. Wade’s signature mask is Captain American-ized with the addition of the typical white wings on the sides and a giant white “A” plastered on the forehead. Instead of the suit being predominantly blue like Steve’s, Wade’s puts red at the forefront, paying tribute to his Deadpool origins.
However, the best part of this suit is perhaps the details. Strapped to Wade’s back are his signature twin katanas, adding a deadlier twist to the Captain America persona. As the name implies—Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe—the primary theme of these variant covers is Wade killing various Marvel heroes. However, Nakayama’s art puts a hilariously ingenious twist on this theme. On the cover, Steve looks visibly pained seeing Deadpool in his new Captain America-inspired suit, with the added caption “Dies” suggesting that Steve is dying from immense levels of ‘cringe.’ This brilliant touch by Nakayama makes his variant cover particularly unique, as it depicts Deadpool ‘killing’ Captain America without any violence needed.
