Marvel has announced further details about its upcoming Wolverine: Revenge miniseries, which will pair superstar writer Jonathan Hickman with iconic artist Greg Capullo, who will illustrate his first Marvel Comics story in years. Distinct from the Wolverine ongoing series also coming soon as part of the X-franchise’s “From the Ashes” relaunch, Revenge will also receive a “Red Band” release, with gore too extreme for the standard edition.

As first revealed by Polygon, the five-part Wolverine: Revenge miniseries will give free rein to its creative team to execute one of the most brutal bloodbaths in Wolverine’s fifty-year history – at least, in its exclusive Red Band edition.

Greg Capullo’s series of Marvel covers from last year signaled that the vaunted artist was back in the fold, and now fans are thrilled that he will be working with Jonathan Hickman, who masterminded X-Men’s previous relaunch with 2019’s House of X, initiating the lauded Krakoan Era for the franchise.

Greg Capullo & Jonathan Hickman Team-Up For A Bloodsoaked Epic

Wolverine: Revenge #1 Debuts This August

With Jonathan Hickman currently revolutionizing Spider-Man lore in Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel fans are ecstatic for him to be returning to the X-franchise as well, with Wolverine: Revenge. The inclusion of Capullo is equally exciting, offering a dream collaboration for long-time comic readers. As quoted by Polygon, the artist sounds as thrilled about the project as anyone, saying:

I’ve finally returned home to Marvel and I’m ready to raise some hell. And, who better to do that with than the Hitman Hickman? To celebrate, Marvel has removed the fences and let us off our leash so that we can bring the most vicious and punishing Wolverine story possible to the fans this summer. I hope they’re prepared.

As with everything released so far about the series, Capullo’s comments have raised fan expectations for the level of violence expected from the miniseries.

While many details are yet to be revealed, Marvel did offer a tantalizing advanced synopsis for the series:

Capullo and Hickman pit Wolverine against a cadre of foes who will turn his world upside down, including Sabretooth, Omega Red, Deadpool, and more. He’s been beaten! He’s been bloodied! And Logan only has one thought on his mind: revenge!

With the mention of Wolverine’s most iconic antagonists – as well as an ally like Deadpool – fan speculation has immediately been sent into a frenzy regarding what the series will entail exactly. Of course, Marvel is keeping more details tightly under wraps for now, until closer to the first issue’s release. All that is known for now is that Wolverine: Revenge will be an intense collision of Jonanthan Hickman and Greg Capullo’s signature creative styles.

Get Ready For An “Absolutely Wild” Story

From the sound of it, Wolverine: Revenge’s creative team has been given the freedom to take Wolverine to unheralded extremes – and with the additional release of a Red Band edition of each issue ofthe series, readers can expect Hickman and Capullo to hold nothing back. Jonathan Hickman had this to say about the upcoming title:

Well, obviously it’s such a privilege to get to work with a legend like Greg. When we first talked about the project, our number one concern was taking the readers on a high-octane, no-hold-barred Wolverine story that was a proper celebration of both the character and Greg returning to Marvel. And like he said, the bosses cut us loose and the result is an absolutely wild book. Honestly can’t wait for everyone to get to check it out.

Given the pedigree of both its author and artist, it is safe to say that Wolverine: Revenge is among the most highly anticipated releases of the year.

As Jonathan Hickman noted, this book is part of the ongoing celebration of a half-century of Wolverine. Given that it also signifies the next step in Grep Capullo’s triumphant reunion with Marvel, readers have multiple reasons to rejoice, and to eagerly await the book’s arrival. Fans familiar with Hickman’s style can expect that he crafted the script in a way to give Capullo’s artwork opportunities to shine. Preview pages for the first issue offer just a glimpse of the series potential for gore, and for now, fans can only begin to imagine what Hickman and Capullo are going to put Wolverine through.

The human mutant Wolverine (a.k.a. Logan) was born James Howlett, blessed with a superhuman healing factor, senses, and physiology.
