2024’s horror sleeper hit Tarot proves that 2025’s Final Destination reboot should be a major box office success. The 2024 horror movie Tarot follows a group of ill-fated teens who read from a cursed tarot deck while vacationing at a remote mansion. One by one, the friends are killed off in increasingly surreal circumstances that echo the cards they were dealt during their fateful tarot reading. Tarot’s ending features a clever twist, but most of the movie’s plot will be familiar for horror viewers and particularly for fans of a famous ‘00s supernatural teen slasher franchise.

Tarot’s story features a couple of creepy monsters based on the tarot cards that the teens were dealt, but the deaths that each character experiences are made to look like gruesome accidents. In this regard, Tarot borrows from the Final Destination franchise that began in 2000 and ended four sequels later with 2011’s Final Destination 5. While the original movie and its first sequel were well-regarded by critics, later sequels were criticized for their repetitive formula. Like Tarot, the Final Destination movies followed a group of teens who suffered inventively gory deaths after a traumatic experience bonded them.

Tarot’s Box Office Proves Final Destination: Bloodlines Can Succeed

The Supernatural Slasher Relied On Inventive Deaths

Since their premises are similar enough for numerous critics to point out the 2024 hit’s inspiration, Tarot’s box office success should bode well for 2025’s upcoming reboot Final Destination: Bloodlines. Final Destination 6 is set to reboot the story of the series, with original franchise supporting star Tony Todd returning. Final Destination: Bloodlines will face one major franchise problem since 2011’s surprisingly clever The Final Destination ended the series with a famously smart twist ending that tied into the original movie’s opening scene. However, Tarot earning a superb $29.9 million on a budget of only $10 million bodes well.

Admittedly, Final Destination: Bloodlines will likely have a higher budget than Tarot. The franchise is well-established, so its bar for relative success will be a lot higher, especially when the most lucrative Final Destination movie, 2009’s The Final Destination, made $66 million ($87 million adjusted for inflation). Since Tarot’s Rotten Tomatoes rating is lower than any of the Final Destination movies, it seems fair to presume that Final Destination: Bloodlines will be able to outdo the horror movie upon its release. Considering Tarot isn’t linked to a known IP, unlike Final Destination: Bloodlines, the franchise’s future seems even brighter.

Final Destination: Bloodlines Needs To Be A Lot Bigger Than Tarot

There’s Strong Evidence It Will Be A Box Office Hit

The first three Final Destination movies cost between $23 and $26 million apiece, while the final two movies each came with a heftier $40 million price tag. As such, Final Destination: Bloodlines will likely cost more than Tarot and will need to earn significantly more to be a box office success. Since Tarot had no brand recognition and abysmal reviews, its box office showing remains positive for Final Destination: Bloodlines. Once the reboot can outdo this maligned teen horror, it should comfortably succeed. The Final Destination franchise’s reliable box office makes a repeat of Tarot’s success even more likely.
