Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman shared a poster for Deadpool & Wolverine on social media, alongside an incredible reference to one iconic Star Wars line from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Deadpool & Wolverine is the third movie in the Deadpool franchise, officially bringing the beloved character into the MCU timeline. As an incredible crossover, Jackman’s reference to one of Star Wars’ best movies was the perfect way to promote the new Deadpool movie, which is releasing in theaters on July 26th, 2024.

Shared on Hugh Jackman’s X account, RealHughJackman, the post included a poster for the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie and added “I’ve got the high ground,” as a reference to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s iconic warning to Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. Hilariously, Star Wars’ official X account responded, “i’m so proud.”

In addition to being a hilarious moment, this post is a reflection of how significant Star Wars’ impact has been on the larger popular culture.

Star Wars isn’t short on iconic lines throughout its long franchise, and many of those great quotes are from the beloved Revenge of the Sith.

Star Wars’ Cultural Impact Strikes Back (Yet Again)

Star Wars’ influence on popular culture is absolutely massive, and that has been the case for decades. Darth Vader’s “No, I am your father” (often misquoted as, “Luke, I am your father”) has appeared in countless forms of media since it was first said in The Empire Strikes Back, which is just one example of how present references to Star Wars are and have been in pop culture. References to the Force, the dark side, Jedi and the Sith, and countless other Star Wars staples have truly permeated cinema and television (in addition to songs, books, etc.) for generations now.

Obi-Wan’s “I have the high ground” from Revenge of the Sith is certainly no exception; allusions to Star Wars extend far beyond just the original trilogy. In fact, in yet another incredible pop culture crossover, this same quote was referenced in the song “Punk Tactics” by Joey Valence & Brae, in the line, “Who’s got the high ground now, Obi-Wan?” In part, this line has become such a cultural phenomenon because it’s (perhaps inadvertently) such a funny one.

The line, although beloved for good reason, makes little sense. It isn’t clear why Obi-Wan being on higher ground would confirm beyond a doubt that the fight was over. While, yes, Obi-Wan did take the opportunity to slice off Anakin’s three remaining flesh limbs when he leaped from his lower ground, there are also plenty of examples of Jedi leaping from a lower point to a higher one and successfully winning against their opponent. In fact, Obi-Wan pulled off a much more stunning leap in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace against Darth Maul.

However, this is part of the joy of the prequel trilogy. This line, and others, such as Obi-Wan’s assertion that “only a Sith deals in absolutes” (arguably an absolute itself) are part of the fabric of the prequels and the larger Star Wars franchise. However, this was a particularly amazing reference to one such prequel trilogy line, bringing the MCU to Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith brilliantly.
