The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is on the way, and here are 10 exciting character team-ups we want to see in the film. The world of Super Mario is full of iconic characters that each have different dynamics with each other, with this being one of the most fun aspects of the franchise. While The Super Mario Bros. Movie did feature some of these character interactions, a lot were excluded due to some characters not appearing in the film and others having different roles in the story. However, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 can fix this.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is officially happening, with it featuring the returns of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and the rest of the gang for another adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom. Details regarding the story of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 are still slim, although it is expected to expand the world of the film series even further. All kinds of new characters could appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, meaning that these 10 team-ups with existing and new characters could finally happen in the sequel.

Mario & Yoshi

The Classic Super Mario World Team-Up

Mario and Yoshi have been a dynamic duo for decades now, which is why a teamup between the titular protagonist and the lovable dinosaur needs to happen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Mario has been riding on the back of Yoshi ever since Super Mario World, although design documents indicate that Yoshi was planned to appear all the way back in the original Super Mario Bros. Yoshi is immensely important to the franchise, meaning that he has to work alongside Mario in the sequel.

Luckily, the post-credits scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie showed a Yoshi egg, teasing that the character will appear in the upcoming sequel. It isn’t yet known how much the story will revolve around Yoshi, but his post-credits appearance means that he will probably play a major role.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 may choose to replace Donkey Kong as Mario’s main partner, and nine characters could be perfect replacements.

Donkey Kong & Diddy Kong

Diddy Was Already In The First Movie

Another obvious character team-up that should happen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. DK and Diddy have been partners ever since the first Donkey Kong Country game, with the two apes teaming up countless times throughout the Donkey Kong franchise and beyond.

Diddy Kong already had a cameo in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with him cheering DK on, although the two didn’t actually interact. Because of this and the knowledge that Diddy Kong exists in the world of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the two need to be seen together in the upcoming sequel. However, there also is a possibility that they would be seen together in the rumored Donkey Kong spinoff movie. Either way, the dynamic duo needs to be seen working together in the franchise’s future.

8

Peach & Daisy

Mario’s Two Most Iconic Princesses

Princess Peach was one of the main characters in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with her being greatly expanded on when compared to her video game counterpart. However, the movie did fail to introduce Daisy, meaning that an iconic pairing from the Super Mario video games was lost. However, it is entirely possible that Daisy could appear in the upcoming film, meaning that a Peach and Daisy team-up in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could happen.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is entirely centered around different kingdoms, and since Daisy is the princess of Sarasaland, she could fit in perfectly with the movie. Seeing how the two monarchs run thier kingdoms differently could be a lot of fun, leading to an interesting and fresh dynamic for Peach and Daisy in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.

7

Bowser & Bowser Jr.

Introdcuing Another Major Villain

Bowser has already been the main villain of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and since he is the main villain of the Super Mario franchise, it is expected that he will play the role of an antagonist once again in the sequel. However, having him be the sole villain again means that the film would risk getting a little stale, meaning that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 should pair him with a new villain: Bowser Jr.

Bowser Jr. is the son of Bowser and, ever since making his debut in Super Mario Sunshine, he has been seen working alongside his father in a lot of villainous ways. Bowser Jr.’s team-ups with his father open up a whole new side of Bowser, showing him as a father rather than as a simple princess-kidnapping villain. This would be a fun way to expand on the character while still reusing him, meaning that it should happen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.

6

Wario & Waluigi

The Dark Side Of Mario & Luigi

Although neither of these characters appear in the first The Super Mario Bros. Movie, one of the most obvious team-ups in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is Wario and Waluigi. Wario and Waluigi are two fan-favorite characters, with them being staples of the various Super Mario spinoff games. Both of them are known for serving in antagonistic roles, meaning that thier conflicts with thier good-hearted counterparts could be a lot of fun.

Since The Super Mario Bros. Movie ended with the Mushroom Kingdom invading Brooklyn, this is the perfect way to introduce Wario and Waluigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. The two plumbers could have witnessed the attack and decided that the Mushroom Kingdom was a great way to make a profit, leading to the two of them heading off on a new greedy endeavor.

5

Yoshi & Birdo

Their Relationship Can Finally Be Fleshed Out

Since it has been established that Yoshi will be a part of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, it only makes sense to introduce another character that is frequently paired with the green dinosaur: Birdo. Birdo started out as an enemy in Super Mario Bros. 2, although she has since evolved into a character of her own, with her frequently appearing in playable roles in the Super Mario spinoff games.

Yoshi and Birdo are often closely associated with each other, but due to neither character being able to talk, their dynamic hasn’t been explored all that much. Since film is a visual medium, Yoshi and Birdo’s silent relationship could finally be explored, cementing exactly how they interact. This team-up doesn’t need to be a major part of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, but it should appear in some way.

4

Toad & Toadette

A Staple Of The Mushroom Kingdom

Although all kinds of Toads appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, one Toad in particular was a major supporting character, with him joining the adventure alongside Mario and Peach. Outside of the first few scenes, however, this Toad didn’t have much to do in the film, with him mainly just following the gang around. However, this could all be fixed by the introduction of one video game character: Toadette.

Toad and Toadette are almost always seen with each other in the Super Mario video games, and while Toadette is a major staple of the Mushroom Kingdom, she didn’t appear in the first film. Since she is one of the Super Mario franchise’s biggest female characters, she needs to make an appearance in the highly anticipated sequel, one that can highlight her friendship with Toad.

3

Mario & Rosalina

The Luma Set This Up

It has been heavily speculated that Rosalina will appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, meaning that the film could finally include a team-up of Mario and Rosalina. Rosalina is one of the newest characters in the Super Mario franchise, with her first appearing in Super Mario Galaxy, although she has quickly become a fan-favorite. The cosmic princess is one of the most powerful characters in the universe, giving her a unique role in the franchise.

The appearance of a Luma in The Super Mario Bros. Movie teased that Rosalina already exists in the series, with her being the mother of all Lumas due to her being over the Comet Observatory. The presence of this Luma could cause Mario and the gang to investigate the cosmos in the next film, leading to him running into Rosalina.

2

Luigi & Daisy

Mirroring Mario & Peach

Mario and Princess Peach’s relationship is one of the most well-known relationships in media, but in most iterations of the Super Mario story, Luigi also has a relationship. Throughout the franchise, Luigi has often been paired with Princess Daisy, although this mostly occurs in spinoff games. Because of this, Luigi and Daisy’s relationship hasn’t been explored all that much in Super Mario stories, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 can fix this.

Since Luigi’s role in the first The Super Mario Bros. Movie was minimized, it would be nice for the sequel to give him some more character development, making up for his original movie sidelining. Showing off Luigi’s relationship with Daisy is a great way to do this, introducing another romantic angle to The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 outside of Mario and Peach.

1

Bowser & Mario

The Protagonist & Antagonist Work Together

Of all the potential character team-ups in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, one with Bowser and Mario is the most exciting. Despite his fame as a villain, many of the most famous Bowser storylines in the Super Mario franchise involve him teaming up with the hero to take down an even greater threat, with thier reluctant partnership being a part of games like Super Mario RPG, Super Paper Mario, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story.

Having Mario and Bowser team up to fight a new villain is the perfect way to keep the antagonist’s story fresh in the sequel, as this would make him a major part of the film without simply rehashing his role in the first film. Thus, Bowser and Mario need to work together in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, allowing for a fun new dynamic to make its way into the world of film.
