One of the biggest and most nebulous questions related to the Maze Runner movies is how many mazes WCKD ran throughout the movie franchise. Based on the books by James Dashner, the movie series explores a dystopian world after the Maze Runner’s virus called the Flare turns humans into mutant zombie-like monsters called Cranks. To try and find a cure, an organization called World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department (WCKD for short) puts a group of teenagers into an experiment where they must survive without resources next to a maze filled with monsters called the grievers.

These teenagers, completely unaware of their lives prior to arriving in the Glade, are the main characters in The Maze Runner. However, after escaping the maze and getting pretend-rescued by people in a helicopter, the Gladers learn that they were not the only ones on which WCKD experimented, meeting other children from different mazes. The other mazes run by the organization could become an important plot point for the Maze Runner reboot in development.

The Scorch Trials Reveals WCKD Had Four Mazes

The Glades Was Site A

The Maze Runner movies slowly reveal information on WCKD’s mazes. Scorch Trials reveals that the Gladers’ maze isn’t the only one. The cafeteria is full of children who went through different mazes. One big change from the Maze Runner books is the exact number of mazes run by the organization. The books only include two mazes, but the start of Death Cure states that, in addition to the Glader’s Site A, there are also Sites B, C, and D.

A Maze Runner reboot is reportedly in development, but details about the plan sound confusing, especially based on when the franchise began.

This means the movie franchise of The Maze Runner confirms four mazes full of children. However, based on the scope of the organization and the fervency with which they are pursuing the cure, it’s highly possible that more mazes exist. This is especially possible based on the large number of children in the lunchroom in The Scorch Trials.

Not a lot of information is shown onscreen about the other mazes in the Maze Runner franchise, except that one maze included all girls except for Aris Jones. The movie-canon graphic novel Scorch Trials Graphic Novel Prelude confirms this was Maze B. The environment is snowy with pine trees, and the maze is made of ice. They have creatures called Shades which look like giant bats. The maze went both horizontal and vertical, requiring both ice skating and climbing.

There aren’t details about the other two mazes, but based on the first two mazes, they all seem to have different climates and physical requirements in order to escape the maze. The groups vary between homogenous and heterogenous regarding gender. The Maze Runner reboot could work as a soft reboot, rather than completely scrapping the existing movies, by using the other mazes as a jumping-off point.
