Dungeons & Dragons Vecna Eve of Ruin is the latest module from the classic tabletop RPG that pits players against one of the game’s oldest enemies. Eve of Ruin celebrates DnD’s 50th anniversary with its most ambitious adventure yet. Set to span the multiverse and encounter heroes and villains from previous adventures, there’s plenty to learn before starting this module.

Vecna Eve of Ruin’s release celebrates Dungeon & Dragons’ fifth anniversary. This multiverse-spanning adventure is expected to pay homage to the half-century-old RPG by revisiting old, beloved locations such as Barovia, Avernus, and more. Eve of Ruin is also a very high-level campaign, starting at level 10 and finishing at the max level of 20. Players can expect challenging combat, puzzles, and other encounters that will use part of their character sheet.

Dungeons & Dragons Vecna Eve of Ruin starts at level 10 and ends at level 20. This means you’ll skip plenty of the low-level questing basics, such as fighting goblins and wolves, and skip straight to the game’s more exciting and challenging parts. Vecna Eve of Ruin intends to go to Dungeons & Dragons max level, which few modules have ever done. This means that DMs can expect powerful spells in DnD, massive damage, and complicated fights with many interacting elements.

D&D – Vecna: Eve of Ruin Review “A Dungeons & Dragons Greatest Hits Album”

Dungeons & Dragons 5e goes out with a bang before its 2024 relaunch thanks to Vecna: Eve of Ruin, a multiverse-spanning high-level campaign.

The recommended party size for Vecna Eve of Ruin is four to six characters in the adventuring party. Naturally, this is Dungeons & Dragons, and everything in the guide is ultimately only a suggestion. If you intend to run a group with either more or fewer characters, you need to adjust and scale your encounters accordingly. If you’re running with a party of eight, you might want to beef up your enemies and Vecna to make fights last longer and feel more impactful.

How To Make a Character For DnD Vecna Eve Of Ruin

Creating a character for Dungeon & Dragons Vecna Eve of Ruin is tricky since the module begins at a high level. Starting at level ten means you’re skipping a ton of material and are already incredibly powerful. It’s best to think of a backstory that explains why your character is already so powerful and prepped for this adventure.

Perhaps your character is a seasoned adventurer or a well-studied Wizard finally stepping out into the world. Check out the Eve of Ruin guide if you’re struggling with character ideas that fit the module. Like most modules, this explains your characters’ lore and possible plot hooks.

Starting at level ten also opens up the opportunity for multiclassing. Multiclassing from level one is often difficult since it requires a massive time investment, but skipping to higher levels is far more viable. Multiclassing is excellent if you want a character with both martial and spellcasting prowess. Each multiclass is very different, with some being far more useful than others.

Ultimately, it’s all about player preference, but figuring out each class’s level distribution, assets, and how it fits into your characters’ lore will help you tremendously.

What Should You Run Before DnD Vecna Eve Of Ruin?

Best Modules To Run

Strahd sits on his throne from Dungeons and Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons Vecna Eve of Ruin has an official one-shot prequel dubbed Vecna Nest of the Eldritch Eye. This single-session quest starts with characters at level three and lasts three to four hours. In this short adventure, players are introduced to Vecna’s cult and begin to unravel only part of the overarching mystery. Given that you start Eve of Ruin at level 10, there is a significant time skip between the prequel and the main campaign. Below are several module adventures that can run from level one to ten.

  • Curse of Strahd
  • Lost Mines of Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Oblisik
  • Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden
  • Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus
  • Storm King’s Thunder
  • Wild Beyond the Witchlight
If you want to run another full module to boost your party up to level 10 without skipping any levels, then “Curse of Strahd” or “Baldur’s Gate: Descend Into Avernus” is your best bet. Both are classic Dungeons & Dragons adventures that run from levels one to ten and will occur in locations revisited in Vecna Eve of Ruin. Curse of Strahd, in particular, is a fan favorite that gives an overarching villain similar to Vecna.

To match this monumental, end-game focused campaign, Vecna has high ambitions. In Eve of Ruin, Vecna’s only goal is complete and total domination over the multiverse. The infamous lich plans to realize his goal by performing the Ritual of Reawakening.

This ritual permits Vecna to create pocket dimensions wherein he can assume complete control and re-write history. The adventuring party must jump from dimension to dimension, collecting pieces of the Rod of Seven Parts necessary to thwart Vecna’s all-consuming plan.

Players will have frequent interactions with the Cult of Vecna and other classic villains in DnD. To start the journey, players enter the seldom-visited city of Neverwinter and eventually meet the power Wizards Three as allies before crossing the multiverse.

Seasoned veterans will remember figures such as Strahd von Zarovich, who seeks a shard of Vecna’s power for himself, and famous locations, such as the eternal Blood War location in Avernus. Ultimately, the adventure concludes after the adventuring party has recovered all seven shards and confront Vecna in his secret pocket dimension in Dungeons & Dragons.
