Oni Press is on a mission to bring EC Comics back from the dead with its upcoming horror anthologies, Cruel World and Epitaphs From The Abyss. Both Cruel World #1 and Epitaphs From The Abyss #1 include legendary comic creators, but the scares don’t stop there. Screen Rant has an exclusive look at the covers and creators for the brand-new Epitaphs From The Abyss #2.
EC Comics was a staple of the Golden Age of Comics, notable for its publication of horror and science fiction titles like Tales from the Crypt and Weird Science. After the publication of Dr. Frederic Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent and the implementation of the Comics Code Authority in 1954, the iconic publisher was forced to shutter its doors. EC Comics may have been killed off, but they never put the final nail in the coffin. Now, EC Comics is back with a vengeance as an imprint of Oni Press.
These horror stories are being given a second life, and Epitaphs From The Abyss promises to live up to the legacy of EC Comics. Among these efforts is Epitaphs From The Abyss #2, which has a superstar team of creators including Jason Aaron, Jorge Fornes, Tyler Crook, Matt Kindt, and Klaus Janson. Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive reveal of the covers by Lee Bermejo, Adam Pollina, Jay Stephens, and Rian Hughes, which can be seen below.

Oni Presents Horrifying New EC Comics Covers
The stories in Epitaphs From The Abyss #2 may be new, but they encapsulate the essence of EC Comics. The goal isn’t to reinvent the wheel; instead, the goal is to make the name EC Comics synonymous with horror once again. In fact, multiple creators from Oni Press have discussed the importance of honoring the original comic books. Among them is Tyler Crook, who has been nominated for multiple Eisner Awards and won a Bram Stoker Award. In reference to keeping the spirit of EC Comics alive, Crook said:
“Being asked to contribute a story to these new EC books is a dream come true. Like a lot of my peers, I am obsessed with the classic EC horror stories and have learned a lot about storytelling and cartooning by pouring over old reprints. I just hope that I’ve been able to make something that is half as good as the stories that I grew up with!”
Moreover, Eisner Award-winning writer Jason Aaron had this to say about the revival:
“What an honor to get to craft a new story in the gloriously twisted tradition of EC Comics. My frightful little ditty is very much a tale of modern horror, starring one of today’s most potent tools of misery and human suffering. But told in the same gleefully wicked style as the EC classics of yesteryear. Brace yourselves, all you freaks and fiends. EC is back.”
Finally, Klaus Janson who is nominated for the 2024 Eisner Hall-of-Fame, said:
“As a kid I discovered the short story format from writers like Ray Bradbury and O. Henry. As a teen, I was introduced to EC Comics and fell in love. Now, as an adult, I get to combine the two with the help of writer Matt Kindt to make the dream of doing an EC story come true!. We push the boundaries just a bit further for a modern audience and I couldn’t be happier!”
