Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5
Kurtwood Smith has two shoutouts in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, which was confirmed by writer Carlos Cisco. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 centers on Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery’s hunt for the ancient treasure of the Progenitors, which can create life itself. Despite its far future 32nd-century setting, Discovery season 5 contains many callbacks to the 24th-century era of Star Trek: The Next Generation. For fans who are especially immersed in Star Trek lore, Kurtwood Smith is also subtly evoked.
On X, Star Trek: Discovery writer Carlos Cisco (@carlos_cisco) replied to a post by Strange New Pod (@strangenewpod) to point out how two of Kurtwood Smith’s Star Trek roles have been referenced in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Specifically, Smith’s turns as the Federation President in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and in Star Trek: Voyager’s “Year of Hell” are woven into the fabric of Star Trek: Discovery season 5’s Progenitors treasure hunt.
