Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #1!Deadpool has no shortage of hilarious pet names for Wolverine, with most of them being used to either anger Logan or make him uncomfortable (and oftentimes both simultaneously). However, his latest one stands above the rest, as this nickname Deadpool has for Wolverine is perfect fan service that’s been 36 years in the making. Indeed, it predates the debut of Deadpool himself, and has recently gained a lot of traction in a totally different sense within the Marvel fandom.

In Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #1 by Joe Kelly and Adam Kubert, Wolverine reluctantly teams up with Deadpool to take down a super-powered serial killer terrorizing the citizens of Vancouver. This villain, known as Wither, was created by a secret organization akin to the Weapon X Program, as he was experimented on and granted superhuman abilities in order to become a living weapon.

However, despite being the immensely powerful and terrifyingly deadly catalyst for this entire story arc, this villain clearly wasn’t up to the task of taking on Wolverine and Deadpool together. The pair of antiheroes sliced him to death, seemingly ending his short-lived reign of terror for good. And it was during this battle that Deadpool uttered his hilarious new nickname for Wolverine: Uncanny DeVito.

Deadpool’s Danny DeVito-Inspired Nickname for Wolverine is a Reference to His Own Origin

Rob Liefeld admits Deadpool was inspired by Danny DeVito’s character in Twins

Deadpool in Arnold Schwarzenegger's place next to Danny DeVito on the poster for Twins.

In an interview with Complex, Rob Liefeld – the co-creator of Deadpool – admitted that Deadpool was inspired by Danny DeVito’s character, Vincent Benedict, in the action/comedy film Twins, which was released 36 years ago in 1988. Liefeld is quoted as saying:

Rob Liefeld: I stole that crap straight out of Twins. When they go to Danny DeVito, ‘How are they twins?’ he goes, ‘All the purity and strength went into Julius. All the crap that was left over went into what you see in the mirror every morning.’ That’s Wade Wilson. I wanted a mercenary, a bounty hunter who got in the Weapon X program, got screwed up and pissed off and sold his talents to the highest bidder. He was a jackhole.

Like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Julius to Danny DeVito’s Vincent, Wolverine was a perfect specimen, while Deadpool was simply ‘all the crap that was left over’. Logan is perhaps Weapon X’s greatest success, a shining example of the program’s ability to create the perfect living weapon. Meanwhile, Deadpool is an insane loose cannon who acts as a walking reminder of how horrific and cruel the Weapon X Program truly is.

Over 60,000 People Want Danny DeVito to Play MCU’s Wolverine

Change.org

Danny DeVito with Marvel Comics' Wolverine.

Right now, there is a petition on Change.org to have Danny DeVito play the rebooted Wolverine in the MCU. So far, there are over 60,000 people that have signed the petition, with a goal set at 75,000. This comes after the previous goal of 50,000 signatures was reached on the ‘Danny DeVito to play Wolverine’ campaign, and only a little more than 10,000 signatures are needed in order for the new goal to be reached as well.

While Hugh Jackman will be reprising the role of Wolverine in the upcoming MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, he’s going to be playing a version of Logan from somewhere outside the main MCU continuity. This means MCU’s Earth-616 still has that particular role to fill, and literally tens of thousands of fans want Danny DeVito to take up the mantle.

In fact, one of those ‘fans’ is acclaimed Marvel Comics artist Alex Ross, who admits in an interview shared on X (Twitter at the time of the post) discussing Wolverine’s character design that Danny DeVito would be a more comic accurate portrayal of Wolverine in live-action.

Tens of thousands of fans, one highly acclaimed comic book artist, and now even Deadpool himself have called for Danny DeVito to play the MCU’s Wolverine in live action, something that’s brought to the forefront of fans’ collective attention with Deadpool’s new nickname for Wolverine in this issue of Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII. However, that’s not the only thing this hilarious nickname achieves, as it’s also the perfect fan service 36 years in the making, as that’s how long ago Twins was released, and when the very idea for Deadpool and his relationship with Wolverine was conceived.
