Action
Superhero
Animation

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the “One-For-All” quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.

One of the best fights from My Hero Academia‘s anime adaptation happens during the Sports Festival between Izuku Midoriya and Shoto Todoroki during episode #23. Throughout the arc, Shoto had refused to use the powers that he had inherited from his father, the ‘hot’ part to his quirk, Hot and Cold. But, Deku’s kind words inspired Todoroki to claim that fire for himself, not letting his father influence how he uses it.

The battle between the two may be short, but it is still bombastic, as both boys use all their power to unleash their might. With a stunning conclusion, this battle stands out as a turning point for the series as a whole, and establishes and builds on the characters of both Deku and Todoroki greatly, as any good tournament arc should.

Naruto has many iconic fights, but few match the excitement of Rock Lee’s battle against Gaara in the Chunin Exams, during episode #48. Gaara had thus far proven to be invincible, his sand powers making him nearly untouchable in a fight. It was only when Might Guy allowed the Shinobi in training to drop his leg weights that the tide began to turn on Gaara.

With his newly revealed speed, Rock Lee begins to actually hit his opponent – remarked upon to be the first time Gaara was actually hit in a fight, turning a seemingly invincible opponent into a very stoppable threat. It’s unsurprising that this standout fight is well remembered among fans and the anime community as a whole; few moments in Naruto can match the sheer hype of when Rock Lee’s training weights come off, earning it a spot among the best.

Cowboy Bebop has a number of iconic fights, almost all of them starring Spike Spiegel as the cool, confident, and unflappable hero. But one villain almost brings him to his knees in session #20, “Pierrot le Fou”. Spike finds himself battling against Mad Pierrot, a strange rotund old man who murders with childlike glee.

The fight takes place in an empty amusement park, coming alive in the dead of the night at the killer’s behest, creating a unique environment for the action to go down in that highlights the dissonance between the cruel violence and the immaturity of the murderer. It’s a standout fight for the series, where Spike is clearly outclassed by this inhuman foe as opposed to his usual confidence. The climax of their battle is one few could forget, as the nature of the childish killer is fully exposed in a disturbing way.

The Katana Man arc of Chainsaw Man begins with a devastating attack on the Public Safety Devil Hunters. Aki is too wounded to fight, Himeno sacrifices herself to buy the team time, and Denji is about to be dragged away by the titular Katana Man and his companion, Sawatari. It’s then that Kobeni Higashiyama appears wielding her knife.

While Kobeni spent most of the previous arc becoming increasingly paranoid and prone to freaking out, this fight shows that when put to the test, she can handle herself. With breakneck speed, she closes in on her opponents and brutally shuts them down in an awesome moment of heroism for the mousy agent. Her newly revealed efficiency and brutality shows off exactly why she ended up in Special Division 4, making it one of the best fights of Chainsaw Man to be animated thus far.

There’s no doubt about it, this fight is Dragon Ball at its best, and deserves a place on this list.

Whereas many fights are defined by the struggle the hero faces, some scenes are too cathartic to pass up. The Beast Titan had been a feared foe throughout the second and third seasons of Attack on Titan, and even before Levi had showed up, had destroyed the scout division charging at him with ease in episode #54. That was all just a diversion so that the Captain could get close.

Once he did, the fight was as good as over. Levi slices the Beast Titan’s arm into ribbons, before disabling and destroying the Titan with ease. This fight shows that Levi’s title of humanity’s strongest soldier is a well-earned one, even if this victory is undercut by Zeke escaping shortly afterward. It’s a highlight of the third season, and given a well deserved place on this list.

With immense spectacle, explosions ringing out all around as the two close in on the Upper Moon demon, as all the fighters pull out all their stops to beat their opponents. The fight is an excellent climax to the arc and second season of Demon Slayer. Ufotable’s talent for animating fights is on display here in a breathtaking battle that can’t be missed.

Monkey D. Luffy and Rob Lucci had already fought once before in One Piece, back in the Enies Lobby arc. It was there that Luffy just barely managed to defeat the agent of Cipher Pol, and emerge victorious. Now, years later, in Episodes #1100 and #1101, both Luffy and Lucci have developed their powers, and are happy to go fight one another again.

However, it soon becomes clear that even with his awakened Devil Fruit, Lucci is no match for Gear 5. A high speed battle ensues, one where Lucci is trying his best to defeat Luffy, who in turn is only barely taking it seriously. The battle is frantic, wild, and fun to watch, as Luffy shows off his new cartoonish abilities proudly throughout, and seeing the incredibly cocky Lucci get knocked down a peg is quite cathartic to watch.

Mahoraga is a Shikigami spoken of in terrified whispers throughout Jujutsu Kaisen. An untameable beast that none can hope to overcome. Yet Sukuna challenges it anyway in episode #41, in a fight that truly emphasizes both Sukuna’s boundless power and Mahoraga’s endless adaptability. The King of Curses attempts to find out how he can overcome Mahoraga, as they clash again and again with no regard for their surroundings.

The resulting fight is perhaps some of MAPPA’s finest work. Both combatants fly around the Shibuya Skyline, bringing destruction in their wake as skyscrapers are felled, vehicles propelled into the air, the world practically being turned on its head around them. Masterfully animated and awe-inspiring in the sheer scope of it all, it is one of the best fights that can be found on Crunchyroll, almost definitively.
