Warning: Spoilers for Batman: Dark Age #2!In DC Comics, Gotham City’s dark protector, Batman, was born the night his parents tragically died in Crime Alley, even though the idea for his iconic bat motif wasn’t fully realized and implemented until much later in Bruce Wayne’s life. But in a new limited series that reimagines Batman’s vigilante origin against a historical 1960s backdrop, Batman gets a new “first” batsuit, a look that puts his original costume to shame.

First introduced in 1939 wearing a simple grey and black batsuit with purple gloves, this Bill Finger-suggested cape and cowl design propelled Batman, in part, to great success and ever-lasting stardom, with his signature superhero look only improving as the decades passed.

Constantly receiving an updated and more current-set origin for his escapades depending on what DC’s latest Crisis event has altered, Batman, in the recently released Batman: Dark Ages #2, has been given a suit that acts as Bruce’s very first in this alternate continuity, courtesy of his tech-whiz and friend, Lucius Fox.

Like his appearance in The Dark Knight, this Lucius Fox was “exiled” to the bowels of Wayne Enterprises when the board canceled the City of Tomorrow project after Bruce was sent to fight in the Vietnam War — a plan that would have turned Gotham into a shining beacon of a town, much like Metropolis. Telling Bruce during a re-introduction visit that Wayne Enterprises now makes “weapons with which to make war on people of Gotham” over improving their lives, Lucius reveals that the high-tech suit in a nearby glass case is something that will help them “fight back.”

A futuristic-looking suit that feels like it was envisioned by hardcore sci-fi fans from the 60s, this outfit, as it’s first presented to Bruce, had a cowl with oval eye-covers and bat-like antennae ears, a long cape with shoulder armor pointed to the sky, chest armor, gauntlets, gloves, tactical boots, a utility belt, and a grayish, greenish color scheme. Next seen using the suit in the field as he thwarts members of the False Face Society attempting to break into Wayne Manor, Bruce is shown to have given his costume a black and grey makeover, including adding a subtle bat-logo to his chest.

Only shown using concussion grenades and his patented scare tactics, it remains to be seen what other gadgets this prototype batsuit has at its disposal, with it doing a commendable job of giving 1960s-set Batman a familiar yet unique look to call his own in this series. Bruce has just begun his campaign against the evil that lurks within Gotham, so fans should check out the next issue of Batman: Dark Age when it hits comic shops in May to see what else this new “first” suit can help with in Batman’s war against crime.
