With two big movie projects on the horizon, Glen Powell looks set to be the face of cinema this summer, which is exactly how it should be following the star’s scene-stealing turn in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. Despite his first film credit dating back to 2003, it’s only in the last couple of years that Powell has become a household name. Earlier this year, Powell starred alongside Sydney Sweeney in Anyone but You, which went on to make $219 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo) into the early months of 2024. However, the actor’s year has only just got started.

Glen Powell was one of several actors who appeared in the Spy Kids movies, which was where the star first got his big break. Since then, he has appeared in numerous blockbuster movies, including The Dark Knight Rises and The Expendables 3. It’s only since his appearance in Top Gun: Maverick, however, that Powell has taken on more leading roles, and if his recent career trend continues, the actor could prove himself to be a highly bankable star. Indeed, 2024 looks set to be the year of Glen Powell.

Twisters Gives Glen Powell A Major Blockbuster Sequel For The Summer Box Office

The Long-Awaited Follow-Up Could Be A Huge Hit

One of Glen Powell’s upcoming movies is Twisters, the long-awaited follow-up to 1996’s Twister. Like the first film, Twisters will follow a group of amateur storm chasers who find themselves on the trail of a series of exceptionally large tornadoes. The cast of Twisters also includes Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos. Powell will play a character called Tyler Owens who, judging by the trailer for Twisters, is a cocky and charismatic Oklahoma native who calls himself the “Tornado Wrangler.” The movie is set to be released in theaters July 19, 2024.

With Twisters, Powell has a major blockbuster that could prove to be very successful. Like Top Gun: Maverick, Twisters is a legacy sequel to a decades-old box office hit. The first Twister film made an impressive global total of $494 million on a $92 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). While 2024’s Twisters isn’t guaranteed to be as successful – after all, the cinematic landscape has changed dramatically since 1996 and the sequel has a production budget double that of its predecessors – the movie is, nevertheless, expected to be one of the biggest hits of the summer.

Hit Man Can Be A Massive Streaming Hit For Glen Powell On Netflix

It Certainly Has All The Right Ingredients

Before Twisters finds its way into theaters, Powell has another movie out in the form of Richard Linklater’s Hit Man. An action comedy, Hit Man is based on a true story and will see Powell playing Gary Johnson, a police mole who poses as tailor-made assassins in order to arrest those who hire his services. Things become complicated when he falls for a killer called Maddy Masters (Adria Arjona). The movie is a good opportunity for Powell to show off his comedic talents and to reaffirm the notion that he is key leading man material.

Hit Man will have a limited cinema release before being available to stream on Netflix starting June 7, 2024. This effectively means that Powell will have two movies out in quick succession – one in theaters and one on streaming, so, the star’s face will be almost inescapable during the summer of 2024. Furthermore, Hit Man‘s near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%, garnered after it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2023, suggests that the movie has the potential to be a massive streaming hit.

Glen Powell’s 2024 Dominance Is Perfect After Top Gun: Maverick Breakout

It Looks Like He Won’t Be Going Anywhere Anytime Soon

After years of playing supporting roles and side characters, it’s about time that Glen Powell has his moment in the spotlight. In his role as Jake “Hangman” Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick, Powell demonstrated a wealth of charm and screen presence. Unfortunately, like almost every actor in Top Gun 2, Powell was playing second fiddle to Tom Cruise. With his upcoming projects, Powell gets to not only display his skills as a leading man but also show off his range as a performer. Ironically, Powell could also prove to be a more relevant screen personality than Cruise over the next few years.

Beyond 2024, it looks as though Glen Powell will continue to dominate both the big and small screens. As well as the projects already mentioned, the actor is scheduled to star in a number of upcoming films and TV shows. These include Edgar Wright’s remake of the 1987 movie The Running Man and John Lee Hancock’s legal drama, Monsanto. Since appearing in Top Gun: Maverick, Powell has become one of the busiest actors currently working in Hollywood, and given his undeniable watchability, that’s not a bad thing.
