Russell T Davies addresses a mysterious recurring character who is appearing throughout Doctor Who season 14, teasing that there is more of the mystery to be explored. Ncuti Gatwa leads the latest season as the Fifteenth incarnation of the Doctor, joined by Millie Gibson’s companion Ruby for eight new adventures across space and time. Alongside returning stars Yasmin Finney, Bonnie Langford, and Jemma Redgrave, actors Golda Rosheuvel, Indira Varma, Jinkxx Monsoon, and Jonathan Groff have also joined the cast.

While Doctor Who season 14 has no shortage of guest stars, Davies’ addressed the presence of a certain recurring face to TV Line.

Susan Twist, who has had background roles in four currently released episodes, holds a great secret that will become more apparent to viewers and the Doctor. Check out Davies’ response below:

There’s a number of women who keep reappearing – How can this be? Why are they mysterious? It’s a world in which there are mysterious neighbours. And the fascinating thing about Susan Twist is that she seems to be playing a different person every time. How can that be? I have no idea, you’ll have to come back and watch… Don’t worry, they (The Doctor and Ruby) will soon start looking the right way. We’ll reveal a little bit more every single week. Again, there’s a climax to that, which is not what you’re expecting. It’s great.

Who Could Susan Twist Be Playing?

Now that Davies has finally addressed Twist’s presence throughout his new era of Doctor Who, viewers may be keen on looking back and seeing where she’s appeared in the past. Twist first made an appearance in the second 60th anniversary special, “Wild Blue Yonder”, as the 15th-century maid Merridew, while she would later appear as an attendee of Ruby’s band’s show in “The Church on Ruby Road”. Season 14 has so far seen Twist appear as a former crew member of the space station in “Space Babies”, while “The Devil’s Chord” saw the recurring star play a tea lady at EMI.

8 Best Theories About Doctor Who Season 14’s Mystery Woman

Millie Gibson’s Doctor Who companion Ruby Sunday is very much a mystery right now. Here are all the biggest theories explaining who abandoned her…

With Twist appearing at various points throughout time and space, many might assume that she is a fellow Time Lord who survived the Master’s (Sacha Dhawan) spiteful purge of Gallifrey in season 12. However, Davies has placed emphasis on the Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris) and Maestro’s (Jinkxx Monsoon) arrival in 1925 being a common thread, so perhaps Twist’s character is another powerful member of the new villain pantheon, only to have spread through time. Or given her waiting to be noticed, Twist may even be the fabled One Who Waits.

Regardless of who Twist may be playing, it is clear from Davies’ acknowledgment that her subtle mystery is important to Doctor Who season 14. While many viewers might have missed her presence in past episodes, the throughline of her appearances feels precisely like the kind of twist-teasing hints the showrunner placed during his initial tenure of Doctor Who. As such, Twist’s characters may play a larger part in the season’s narrative than audiences truly realize.

Originally premiered in 1963, Doctor Who is a sci-fi series that follows a powerful being known as a Time Lord, referred to as the Doctor. Using an interdimensional time-traveling ship known as the TARDIS, the Doctor travels time and space with various companions as they solve multiple problems and help avert catastrophe as much as they almost cause it. Though the Doctor is always the same character, they experience regenerations, allowing them to be recast every few seasons as a unique immortal being with new personality traits.
