Warning: This article contains spoilers for Unfrosted.

After the success of Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted, Netflix has a perfect concept for a prequel movie. “Based on a true story” films have always been popular with audiences, and Unfrosted is no exception. Set in 1963 Michigan, this movie tells the story of the competition between Kellogg’s and Post to create the perfect breakfast pastry. Because it’s loosely based on a true, Unfrosted includes shockingly accurate details that at an extra layer of enjoyment to the comedy.

Between the silly but true premise and Unfrosted’s A+ cast, the movie has gone over exceptionally well with audiences, despite flopping with critics. Due to this success, the question about a sequel or prequel is inevitable. Luckily, there’s a phenomenal story that pulls from real history which could make for a great prequel.

Unfrosted‘s Prequel Could Explore Kellogg’s Foundation & Cereal Empire

The show Unfrosted is a zany movie about a rivalry in the breakfast food field. The movie is so niche that it feels like a one-off movie. However, there’s another story that is a prime option for a sequel. The Pop-Tart movie heavily features the “Five Cereal Families,” including the Kellogg company. Long before Kellogg’s versus Post, an intense rivalry existed between the two brothers John Harvey Kellogg and Will Keith Kellogg over the rights to flaked cereal and the Kellogg name. The pair even branched off, creating two competing breakfast companies.

The writers could easily add comedy to the story, staying in the style of Unfrosted. After all, in the true story, Kellogg’s ran the hilarious Wednesday Wink Day ads where shoppers got a free box of cornflakes for winking at a grocery worker on Wednesdays (via LGTC Podcast). This is just one example of how the true story already has enough funny material for a movie without overly fictionalizing details. Plus, there is a heartwarming ending that audiences would enjoy. Considering the strong premise and the popularity of Unfrosted on Netflix, the Kellogg story seems like a great opportunity for the producers.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Recent Movie Comments Make Another Unfrosted Movie Less Likely

Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan in Unfrosted

Despite there being a great story to work with, the chance of a Netflix Unfrosted prequel seems unlikely based on Jerry Seinfeld’s comments on the red carpet. Seinfeld told the Associated Press when asked that he had no more plans to direct movies. The idea to direct the film came from someone else, rather than an internal drive. He much prefers working as a stand-up comedian. Hopefully, another director will be able to pick up the mantle and create a hilarious prequel to Unfrosted focusing on the battling Kellogg brothers.
