Since his first appearance, DC’s primary Green Lantern has always been human, but now a new epic piece of cosplay proves this need not be the case. Fans have been thrilled by the exploits of human Lanterns Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Jessica Cruz as they patrol the cosmos. Now, cosplayer brandontheshapeshifter has just unveiled an awesome Green Lantern-inspired cosplay, showing the power of an alien Lantern.

Brandontheshapeshifter showcased his amazing cosplay in two posts on Instagram. The first post features Brandon in a Green Lantern outfit of his own design, with sharp edges all over. Brandon wears purple make-up to give the Green Lantern an otherworldly appearance. This Lantern features all the tools and toys, including a ring and a green lantern to charge the ring.

The second post is a short movie, featuring original audio, allowing fans to see the cosplay in action.

In the various posts, Brandon makes the case for non-human Green Lanterns.

The Green Lantern Corp’s Diversity Makes For Some Visually Stunning Characters

DC’s Green Lantern Books Primarily Focus on Humans

Although humans such as Hal Jordan and John Stewart are the best known members of the Green Lantern Corps, they comprise but a small fraction of its membership. Indeed, most Lanterns are non-human, as the Corps draws from across the known universe to fill its ranks. There have been several non-human Green Lanterns who have become popular, such as Tomar Re and Kilowog, but by far DC’s Green Lantern titles stick to Earth. The species that make up the Green Lantern Corps are diverse, ranging from microscopic bacteria to giant planets.

While the Green Lantern titles have featured numerous alien Lanterns, the book still primarily focuses on the Corps’ human members. However, if DC wished to shake up the Green Lantern mythos, a non-human Lantern could be assigned to Earth. All Sector 2814 needs is a Lantern–there is nothing to say it must be human. A non-human Green Lantern defending Earth opens up intriguing story possibilities, namely how an extraterrestrial, from a completely different civilization, would interact with humans. Humans, and even other heroes, may be less prone to trust an alien Green Lantern.

Although the chances of a non-human Green Lantern becoming the book’s focal point are slim, brandontheshapeshifter points the way should DC ever decide to try this approach. Brandon’s costume is faithful to the traditional designs of the Green Lantern Corps, but he makes it his own at the same time. A Green Lantern’s costume can change to fit its user, and Brandon has taken advantage of this, creating an outfit that is both dynamic and comic accurate. The video Brandon created is a “sizzle reel” showing the awesome possibilities of a non-human Green Lantern, and DC should take note of it.
