Ncuti Gatwa teases Doctor Who‘s new horrors and foes ahead of season 14’s release. The Fifteenth Doctor actor joined the series in the final act of 2023’s 60th-anniversary special, facing the powerful Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris) alongside David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor. Gatwa will be joined by Millie Gibson’s new companion Ruby Sunday in eight new adventures following their meeting in 2023’s season special “The Church on Ruby Road.”

Ahead of Doctor Who season 14’s arrival, Gatwa teased to DoctorWho.TV just how the new creatures took him by surprise. The star explained that the creatures are terrifying forces of nature from the get-go, taking him by surprise. He then said that his new era of the long-running series would scare young viewers with an early taste of horror. Check out Gatwa’s explanation below:

Russell’s brain has managed to create a whole new level of monster that’s really terrifying! In the first episode, for instance, the monster is so scary. When I heard about it, I thought, ‘Oh, that’s a nice beginning-of-the-series monster to warn the audience about what’s to come. It’s on the same level of scariness as the Goblin King.’ But then I saw the actual costume and it is absolutely terrifying. I was so shocked! We certainly are on track to get a whole new generation of kids hiding behind the sofa!

Doctor Who Season 14 Sees The Doctor Grapple With New, Unpredictable Foes

One Of The New Doctor Who Villains Is Jinkx Monsoon’s Maestro.

Doctor Who season 14 represents a whole new status quo unlike any other arc explored in the revival’s arc. The Doctor is no longer the sole survivor wracked with guilt as he began in season 1, the legend questioning his place in the universe seen in Steven Moffat’s tenure, or the hero grappling with the mysterious past of Chris Chibnall’s era. Instead, Gatwa’s Doctor is a free soul fresh from past burdens following the events of Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary.

Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials Ending Explained

The final Doctor Who anniversary special, “The Giggle,” is a regeneration story like no other – and its ending sets up some tremendous adventures.

With season 14 focusing on newer, more fantastical enemies beyond typical comprehension, the Doctor is left to grapple with learning about his foes on the go when the Toymaker’s forewarned legions arrive. As seen in “The Church on Ruby Road,” the Doctor admits that he is still in the dark about many strange foes, such as the goblin’s complex technology and manipulation of coincidence and chance. While Doctor Who‘s goblins may have only been scavengers bumbling through time, it is clear more powerful adversaries will throw Gatwa into some of his most difficult fights yet.

While Doctor Who season 14’s opening episodes “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord” may seem jovial, less intense affairs involving powerful infants and a plot involving The Beatles, Gatwa hinted that the episodes will take viewers by surprise. With Davies teasing Jinkx Monsoon’s mysterious Maestro as one of the Doctor’s strongest foes and Ruby caught in a terrifying trap in trailers, the two-episode premiere may shape up to be a perfect tone-setter for the season. As such, if these early foes are as terrifying as Gatwa hints, it could lead to discussions about whether later-season monsters could outdo them.

Originally premiered in 1963, Doctor Who is a sci-fi series that follows a powerful being known as a Time Lord, referred to as the Doctor. Using an interdimensional time-traveling ship known as the TARDIS, the Doctor travels time and space with various companions as they solve multiple problems and help avert catastrophe as much as they almost cause it. Though the Doctor is always the same character, they experience regenerations, allowing them to be recast every few seasons as a unique immortal being with new personality traits.
