The filming start date for Riddick 4 has been revealed. The Riddick film franchise began back in 2000 with the film Pitch Black. This movie introduced Vin Diesel as Richard B. Riddick, an antihero from the 28th century. Pitch Black was followed up by The Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick. Since Riddick’s 2013 release, Riddick 4, titled Riddick: Furya has been announced.

Now, The Wrap confirms the start of filming for Riddick: Furya, which will begin in August. The film will be shot in Germany, Spain, and the U.K. While some of the details of Riddick 4 have yet to be revealed, a synopsis for the film has been announced. The story of Riddick: Furya will follow the protagonist returning to his homeland to find fellow Furyans fighting for their lives. Check out the full synopsis of Riddick: Furya below:

Riddick finally returns to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

What Does This Mean for Riddick: Furya’s Release Date?

With a production schedule and synopsis underway, the signs are looking bright for Riddick 4. The whisperings of this fourth installment date all the way back to 2013, when Diesel first expressed his desire to make two more sequels after Riddick. Two years later, Diesel confirmed the continuation of the Riddick franchise in 2015. From there, progress on the film was slow, with occasional updates coming (e.g. the notice in 2019 that the script for Riddick 4 had been written). The latest update is the most significant one that Riddick 4 has gotten in 11 years.

Despite Riddick 4 now having a filming start date, the film does not yet have a release date. There are a number of factors that will affect said release date, including how efficient the production on the sequel will be. 2013’s Riddick had a $38 million budget, thus showing that it was working on a relatively large scale. The budget for Riddick: Furya has not yet been released, but it will likely be fairly high given how many years have gone by for this anticipated sequel.

Diesel’s schedule will also be another major factor in the production of Riddick: Furya. Diesel is a busy actor who is involved in multiple upcoming projects, including the high-budget film Fast X: Part 2. Diesel does, however, have a track record of prioritizing Riddick films. In 2006, he made a deal with Universal that he would make a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift in order to obtain the rights to Riddick. This move suggests that Diesel cares deeply about the Riddick franchise, thus will likely prioritize it in his schedule again for Riddick 4.
