7 Recent Mark Hamill Voice Roles You Might Have Missed

Mark Hamill‘s most famous live-action character is Luke Skywalker, but his voice roles hugely outweigh his in-person appearances across his various franchises. Hamill has a recognizable versatile voice, and his animated characters tend to stray from textbook heroic figures, unlike his main Star Wars persona. His most iconic voice role is arguably Batman: The Animated Series‘ version of the Joker, a role he reprised for the Batman: Arkham video game trilogy and various other cameos. Even when compared with every actor to play the Joker in live-action, Hamill’s talents often have fans placing him near the top of the list.

Mark Hamill’s passion for voice acting is evident via the sheer number of roles he’s constantly landing in various properties. Although Hamill’s more recent voice roles tend to appear in TV shows, the actor still breathes life into animated movie characters too. While some of Hamill’s recent voice-acting jobs remain within the sci-fi genre he’s heavily associated with, he also crosses into other kinds of stories. In addition, his characters aren’t always confined to an animated world, as he has been known to step into into a live-action persona without ever showing his face.

Voice acting requires a different skill set from acting in the traditional manner, but Mark Hamill has proven time and time again that he flourishes in either environment. Stepping into the recording booth has led to some of Mark Hamill’s most iconic roles outside of Star Wars, so it’s obvious that adding the string to his bow goes far beyond simply broadening his résumé. While Hamill has never really taken a break from either form of acting, his recent voice roles have been especially prominent, with a few flying under the radar.

While Mark Hamill is best known for his roles as Luke Skywalker and the Joker, he has voiced iconic roles in more franchises than some may realize.

Chanukah Zombie In Futurama

Hamill’s Futurama character imparts the show’s Xmas lore

Futurama‘s 2023 return didn’t hold back when it came to the pedigree of its guest stars. Mark Hamill’s role in Futurama season 11, episode 6, “I Know What You Did Next Xmas,” comes in the form of the Chanukah Zombie. The character appears alongside Kwanzaabot, in what Amy Wong vaguely refers to as an “Animated Holiday Special” that she and her family are watching at the start of the episode. The Chanukah Zombie serves as the narrator, regaling the story of how Robot Santa came into existence.

Xmas lore in Futurama runs quite deeply, so it makes sense to recap the canon after the show’s lengthy spell of cancelation. However, while Kwanzaabot has appeared in other episodes of Futurama, and outside an in-universe animated special, it’s unclear whether his undead co-star exists within the reality of the show. “I Know What You Did Next Xmas” is one of the better Futurama season 11 episodes, and while Hamill was used relatively sparingly, the franchise would be better for his return.

EV-9D9 In The Mandalorian

Hamill has returned to the Star Wars universe several times

Luke Skywalker is Mark Hamill’s biggest live-action role, and while modern filmmaking techniques have allowed him to play the younger version of the famous Jedi in recent times, the actor has also been secretly present in other corners of a galaxy far, far away. Hamill voiced EV-9D9 in one episode of The Mandalorian, although the brief cameo is easy to miss. Hamill’s portrayal of the droid called for his voice to be heavily altered. That way, it could more closely match the original EV-9D9 voice actor from 1983’s Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.

EV-9D9 is a great example of how Mark Hamill’s other Star Wars roles tie him to the franchise that kickstarted his career. He may only have appeared on-screen as Luke Skywalker, but Hamill has built up a small catalog of other Star Wars characters as a result of his voice-acting talents. While they may not be quite as glamorous, the roles are on a sliding scale of significance, whereas others are arguably a fun piece of fan service. Hamill didn’t need to voice EV-9D9 in The Mandalorian, but it’s great that he did.

Mr. Big In The New Looney Tunes

Mark Hamill does kids’ shows too

At roughly the same time as he was making his Star Wars return in The Mandalorian, Hamill was also lending his voice to a villainous cartoon hamster called Mr. Big. The anthropomorphized rodent has all the intellect and accouterments of a traditional bad guy, just packed into a palm-sized frame. Many of Hamill’s voice roles fall on the dramatic side, so the fact he’s willing to apply his abilities to lighter stories shows not only the actor’s thirst for variety, but also his sense of humor. Although Hamill is only credited as Mr. Big once, his name also appears alongside the character of Hans Hamster in The New Looney Tunes season 3, episode 13, “Daffy Duck: Motivational Guru/The Towering Hamsterno.” So, his dual role in The New Looney Tunes was actually part of a longer association with the show. His two episodes may be 30 episodes apart, but the show’s incredibly high episode count means Hamill’s stories are still part of the same season.

Merv Pumpkinhead In The Sandman

Merv is also a DC character, just like Hamill’s Joker

Hamill’s trippy The Sandman character is another instance of his live-action acting career intersecting with his voice acting roles. While Merv Pumpkinhead is an animated character, the disillusioned handyman speaks and directly interacts with the live-action members of The Sandman cast and characters. Premiering in 2022, The Sandman means an addition to Hamill’s litany of DC comic book characters.

Although Hamill only played Merv Pumpkinhead in two out of the 11 episodes of The Sandman, he made a lasting impact on the show’s inaugural season. He appeared in non-consecutive episodes – first in The Sandman season 1, episode 7, “The Doll’s House,” and then in The Sandman season 1, episode 9, “Collectors.” The Sandman season 2 renewal opens the door for Hamill to return as Merv Pumpkinhead, once more stepping into the world created by Neil Gaiman.

Skeletor In Masters Of The Universe: Revolution

Hamill’s recent take on the legendary villain comes with the character’s reimagining

Mark Hamill started 2024 as part of a huge project, continuing the story of the He-Man franchise in a five-episode sequel TV show. Hamill has been the voice of Skeletor and his associated variants since 2021’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation. While Hamill felt just one episode short of appearing in all 10 installments of Revelation, his Skeletor featured in all five episodes of Revolution. Other than the Joker, many of Hamill’s animated characters are morally ambiguous at best, Skeletor is one of the truest villains he’s ever played.

Masters of the Universe as a franchise isn’t quite the force it once was, but the long-running animated show still has a dedicated fan base due to its rich history and extensive lore. In addition, the presence of Kevin Smith as the showrunner and Mark Hamill starring alongside other sci-fi icons like William Shatner and Gates McFadden all go to show how well-respected the property still is. Furthermore, landing the role of the story’s main antagonist proves both Hamill’s talent and his ongoing status as an industry icon.

Art Rosebaum In Invincible

Art is one of Hamill’s most grounded animated characters

Mark Hamill doesn’t often have the chance to voice a run-of-the-mill human character, but Prime Video’s Invincible allows him to do just that. After playing such out-of-this-world figures, like Skeletor and Merv Pumpkinhead, Art Rosebaum is a vast departure from Hamill’s recent exploits. Art is the tailor to the superheroes of the Invincible universe, although he always has sage wisdom to impart to any clients in need. Hamill’s role in the Invincible cast is to breathe life into a figure with no murderous tendencies, hidden agenda, or supernatural edge.

As such, it makes a refreshing change to hear Hamill’s voice coming out of the mouth of such a wholesome figure. Art featured in the very first episode of Invincible, but only went on to appear twice more in season 1, missing out on five of the eight episodes. He has been used similarly in Invincible season 2. With Art Rosebaum being something of a side character, it makes sense that Hamill wouldn’t be called upon as often as other members of the cast, but he still plays an important role.

Granduncle In The Boy And The Heron

Hamill added to his list of animated characters with a new anime persona

Mark Hamill joined an all-star cast for the English language version of 2023’s The Boy and the Heron. Playing the enigmatic Granduncle, Hamill contributed to the Studio Ghibli movie winning the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Anime is not a common occurrence for Hamill, but his performance as Granduncle sits perfectly within the fabric of the movie. As with other Ghibli movies, the dialogue for The Boy and the Heron was originally recorded in Japanese. So, while Hamill put his stamp on Granduncle, he wasn’t quite able to originate the role as he has in other properties.

That being said, seeing Hamill rise to a new challenge so late in his career is another sign of how he is always willing to grow as a voice actor. His casting in The Boy and the Heron is a more pronounced version of his presence in Masters of the Universe: Revolution. When the star power of both casts is considered, The Boy and the Heron easily comes out on top when it comes to the English-speaking cast, but the fact that Mark Hamill is present in both instances proves he’s still at the top of his game.
