7 Reasons Why The Mandalorian Season 4 Becoming Star Wars’ Next Movie Is Great – & 7 Reasons It’s A Mistake

7 Reasons Why The Mandalorian Season 4 Becoming Star Wars’ Next Movie Is Great – & 7 Reasons It’s A Mistake

It looks as though The Mandalorian season 4 has become a movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu. When The Mandalorian debuted in 2019, it immediately became extremely popular – as something surprisingly separate from the Skywalker saga. While later seasons have introduced more familiar faces and cross-over characters, the show itself has remained true to its core – the father-son bond between a former Jedi youngling and a Mandalorian who is completely clueless when it comes to the Force and the Jedi.

Lucasfilm has now confirmed Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu are now making their way to the big screen, in The Mandalorian & Grogu. Little is currently known about The Mandalorian & Grogu; there are even conflicting reports over whether or not the movie has effectively replaced The Mandalorian season 4. That does seems likely – just because of the time constraints and demands of filming. But would that decision be a wise one for Lucasfilm? Here are the pros and cons.

Here is how to watch all Star Wars movies and TV shows chronologically and in order of release, and how each fits into the Star Wars timeline.

14 The Mandalorian & Grogu Will Finally Bring Star Wars Back To The Theater

Pro

Star Wars hasn’t been in theaters since the controversial Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, back in 2019. That was 5 years ago. COVID-19 pandemic pausing the world, many shows and movies set to go into production and/or release over the last 4 years have been delayed. Lucasfilm was not spared from this, and many of its projects were put on hold. As such, Star Wars has gone longer than planned without a box-office release. The Mandalorian & Grogu will finally bring Star Wars back to theaters.

13 It’s A Shame Not To Finish The Mandalorian In Its Original Format

Con

The Mandalorian is a TV show for a reason. While the prospect of Din Djarin and Din Grogu making it to the box office is exciting, The Mandalorian works best as a TV show; the episodic nature of television allows for a very detailed story and a gradual and realistic development of bonds. This is what makes Din Grogu and Din Djarin’s relationship so special. The idea of The Mandalorian not getting proper closure in its original format is a sad one, as there are so many things The Mandalorian season 4 could do that a movie cannot.

12 The Mandalorian & Grogu Will Bring Familiar Mandalorian Planets To The Big Screen

Pro

The Mandalorian has featured many planets, both old and new. It is always exciting to see Star Wars planets on the big screen. Because of the variety of planets in the show, there are lots of interesting and beautiful places that the movie could take audiences to. Further, because movies have a bigger scope than TV shows, there is a possibility that The Mandalorian & Grogu could show more of these planets than the series itself has been able to.

11 The Mandalorian & Grogu May Not Bring As Many Places To Life As You’d Think

Con

Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) and Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) walk through the streets of Nevarro in season 3 episode 1 of The Mandalorian.

Unfortunately, while The Mandalorian & Grogu may be able to explore worlds in detail, its time constraint means that it likely won’t have time to bring as many places to life as usual. The Mandalorian episodes typically run between 30 and 60 minutes each. This means each season has a lot of time to spend – far more than a movie. As such, The Mandalorian & Grogu will probably have to cut down on the number of planets Din Djarin and Din Grogu visit to save time.

10 The Mandalorian & Grogu Will Bring In Familiar Mandalorian Faces

Pro

Bo-Katan and Mandalorians in Season 3 Finale

The Mandalorian & Grogu will also probably bring in familiar faces such as Bo-Katan Kryze and the Armorer. This is exciting because these characters have never been seen on the big screen. In fact, very few Mandalorians have been shown in Star Wars movies. The Mandalorian & Grogu is an opportunity to give Mandalorians a more substantial role.

9 Will The Mandalorian Movie Be Able To Bring These Characters In?

Con

Group of Mandalorians in The Mandalorian season 3.

Just as with the planets, The Mandalorian & Grogu may not have that much time to spend on bringing in the other Mandalorians. As such, it’s possible audiences won’t get to see them at all, or, if they do, that their role will be short and downplayed. This would be unsatisfying given how integral the Mandalorians have been to the show. Reducing the time that they’re on-screen to save time is likely inevitable, given that Din Djarin and Din Grogu will probably spend at least part of the movie traveling to different planets and hunting Imperials.

8 The Mandalorian & Grogu Could Bring Boba Fett Back To Theaters

Pro

Boba Fett in The Mandalorian season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett

Seeing Boba Fett back on the big screen would be particularly satisfying. Boba Fett was initially built up to be a really cool character in the original trilogy. His silent and cold nature combined with his always having his face hidden made him an intimidating antagonist. It was disappointing to see him killed off almost immediately. The Mandalorian & Grogu has the opportunity to rectify that, since Din Djarin and Boba Fett have already fought together.

Further, if Din Djarin and Din Grogu are to spend at least part of the movie hunting down the Imperial remnant – which is likely considering how The Mandalorian season 3 ended – then it would make sense for them to team up. After all, Boba Fett has every reason to dislike the Imperial remnant after the Empire left him for dead. He no longer works for them. It would make complete sense for him to get a proper part in The Mandalorian & Grogu, hunting the Imperial remnant alongside Din Djarin and Din Grogu.

7 Boba Fett Could Overshadow The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Main Characters

Con

As exciting as it would be if The Mandalorian & Grogu brought in Boba Fett as a side character, this could quickly become problematic. After all, Boba Fett is a well-known and popular character. His presence could easily steal the show and take the focus away from Din Djarin and Din Grogu’s story. Since The Mandalorian & Grogu may replace The Mandalorian season 4, it should keep the focus on its title characters. Including Boba Fett jeopardizes that.

6 The Mandalorian & Grogu Will More Than Likely Be A Huge Hit At The Box Office

Pro

Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian.

Given the popularity of The Mandalorian, it’s almost guaranteed that The Mandalorian & Grogu will be a huge hit. This will be good for Lucasfilm, as its last movie wasn’t received well. The Mandalorian & Grogu is a chance for Lucasfilm to redeem itself. Further, choosing to make their next movie about Din Djarin and Din Grogu is a good idea. Because of the show’s popularity, it will attract fans who may not be as familiar with the movies but know The Mandalorian, casting a wider net than the prequels or sequels, which both relied on the original trilogy’s fan base.

5 The Mandalorian & Grogu Won’t Be Available On Disney+ Right Away

Con

Since 2019, The Mandalorian has been releasing directly to Disney+. This has allowed fans to watch and re-watch episodes as soon as they come out as part of their Disney+ subscription. One downside of a stint at the box office is that audiences will have to wait for it to become available on Disney+. If fans want to watch it more than once, they will have to pay to see it in theaters each time or wait until it becomes available to stream.

4 The Next Star Wars Movie Is A Great Way To Introduce Characters To The Big Screen

Pro

Dave Filoni’s untitled The Mandalorian movie is also in development. Unlike The Mandalorian & Grogu, Filoni’s movie is set to be the culmination of several Star Wars TV shows, including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett. The Mandalorian & Grogu is a great way to introduce Din Djarin and Din Grogu to the big screen ahead of such an ambitious project. Giving them a movie of their own will allow these two awesome characters the chance to shine on their own before they share the screen with other important characters like Ahsoka and Boba Fett.

3 There Will Be Less Grogu and Din Djarin Than The Mandalorian Season 4

Con

This is an unavoidable consequence of the medium. Movies typically run from 90 to 150 minutes, give or take. The Mandalorian season 3 alone had a run time of 360 minutes. If The Mandalorian & Grogu does end up replacing The Mandalorian season 4, audiences will get less time with Din Djarin and Din Grogu.

2 Season 3 Had A Big Enough Story That There Is Ample Material For A Movie

Pro

Between Bo-Katan Kryze and the Mandalorians and Din Djarin arranging work with the New Republic to hunt down the Imperial remnant, there’s no shortage of content for the movie to explore. There are lots of exciting plot points that The Mandalorian & Grogu could build on. For example, given that Grand Admiral Thrawn made it back to a galaxy far, far away at the end of Ahsoka season 1 and Din Djarin and Din Grogu are hunting the Imperial remnant, they could be some of the first to encounter him. This would also set up Filoni’s movie well.

1 There Are Too Many Storylines To Resolve In A 2-Hour-Long Movie

Con

Paz Vizsla, the Armorer, Bo-Katan Kryze, and Din Djarin in The Mandalorian season 3 superimposed over the fall of Mandalore

Since The Mandalorian season 3 had 360 minutes to tell its story, it included a lot of interesting storylines that would be hard to resolve in a single movie. For example, the Mandalorian prophecy was teased to be a big deal for season 4. Given that it involves riding mythosaurs into an epic battle, that plot could be a movie all on its own. Add Din Djarin and Din Grogu’s separate storyline as they hunt the Imperial remnant across the galaxy, and it becomes clear that trying to tie off all these plots in a single movie will be challenging.
