6 Major Netflix TV Shows That Won’t Return Until 2025

6 Major Netflix TV Shows That Won’t Return Until 2025

While Netflix viewers have been eagerly awaiting the return of their favorite shows, sadly there are some series that won’t be back until 2025. Due to both the Writers Guild of America (WAG) and the SAG-AFTRA strikes, there were plenty of series that have had their productions delayed and, in some cases, won’t have new seasons ready to air until 2025. With the conflicting schedules of television stars and the massive amount of production work that goes on behind the scenes, some series just need some extra time to ensure the quality remains high when they do eventually return.

While not every delayed Netflix series has been given an official updated release date, previous seasons’ production schedules gave insight into how long after filming wrapped a new season was ready to premiere on Netflix. Other shows, such as Wednesday and Stranger Things, have already provided information to let audiences know that there will be a long wait until the new season is ready. Due to a variety of factors, there are several major Netflix shows that won’t be returning until 2025.

The comedy-drama Ginny & Georgia was such a hit with viewers that Netflix has renewed it for a third and a fourth season. This renewal came as no surprise as, according to their recent entertainment report, the second season was the second most watched show on Netflix with viewers clocking in 665,100,000 hours of watch time. However, due to the strikes, production on Season 3 has yet to begin and, based on the two-year wait between Season 1 and 2, it may be 2025 before Ginny & Georgia returns.

The Netflix romantic drama Virgin River has seen great success since it first premiered in 2016 and has been renewed for an upcoming sixth season. Telling the story of Mel Monroe, a nurse practitioner trying to start fresh in a small town, Virgin River was one of Netflix’s biggest unsung hits, and a sixth season was confirmed before Season 5 even premiered. Filming for the fourth season of the popular fantasy drama The Witcher was originally set to begin in September 2023 but was delayed until 2024 (via Looper) because of the strikes, but also because its lead star Henry Cavill exited The Witcher. Cavill has since been replaced by Liam Hemsworth, although there were still some lingering questions about why Cavill left a show based on a book series he reportedly loved. According to Redanian Intelligence, The Witcher Season 4 is currently planned to start filming in March 2024 and last until October 2024, which means a likely 2025 premiere.

The Netflix live-action series One Piece was a rare anime/manga adaptation that managed to capture the spirit of the original in a way that satisfied both audiences and critics. With compelling performances and strong writing, it did not repeat the mistakes of previous Netflix anime adaptations and was renewed for a second season in September 2023. However, Season 2 was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and Tomorrow Studios president Beck Clements said in Variety that it will be “somewhere between a year and 18 months” after filming was completed before One Piece will return, meaning it will likely be 2025.

The supernatural horror Wednesday was a major hit for Netflix when Season 1 premiered in 2022 and turned its lead Jenna Ortega into a major Hollywood celebrity. Based on Wednesday Adams, the macabre little sister of The Addams Family, the show was propped by a hilarious deadpan performance by Ortega and even a viral dance that struck a chord with viewers on TikTok. However, despite the success of Wednesday and the second season renewal back in January 2023, production was delayed as a result of the actor’s and writer’s strikes, which meant Wednesday would not return until 2025.

Filming on Wednesday was expected to commence before the end of 2023; however, did this not occur and the production is eyeing an April start date (via Deadline) the filming location switching from Romania to Ireland for the second season. Despite these delays, Ortega has remained busy and appeared in Scream VI as well as being cast in the upcoming sequel Beetlejuice 2. While it was disappointing that audiences have had such a long wait for the return of Wednesday, it has made a star out of Ortega, who stands as one of the most sought-after young actresses working today.

Stranger Things will turn nine years old in 2025 which means that it has slowly been catching up to the young ages that its child stars were way back in Season 1. Having already faced an extended delay between Season 3 and 4 due to the pandemic, its sixth and final season was also delayed because of the recent actors and writers’ strikes which forced its planned production to grind to a halt. The result of this delay meant viewers would not see the conclusion of Stranger Things until late 2025 or even early 2026 (via Hollywood Reporter.)

While Stranger Things remained one of the most popular shows on Netflix, this has resulted in conflicting schedules for its sought-after cast and especially its breakout star Millie Bobby Brown, who now also leads the Enola Holmes franchise. The highly anticipated conclusion to Stranger Things will finally resolve the Hawkins residents’ troubles with the terrifying alternative dimension of the Upside Down. However, that’s not say there can’t be more adventures as a spin-off Stranger Things animated series was also announced.
