5 Period Dramas Aries Will Love (& 5 They Will Hate)

Aries is the first sign in the zodiac, and they take that position to heart. They are extremely active and competitive people with a lot of passion and energy. Given these aspects of their personality, period dramas might not seem like the ideal genre for Aries. But, of course, all it takes is the right movie.

Period dramas take the audience back to a distinct era to explore the world of that day. Though Aries will want to avoid some of the well-known films of the genre, there are some that might be right up their alley. Here are five period dramas Aries will love and five they will hate.

Love: 300 (2006)

5 Period Dramas Aries Will Love (& 5 They Will Hate)

Period dramas don’t necessarily have to be historically accurate, but even still, 300 is pushing the boundaries of the genre. The film tells the true story of the 300 Spartans who took on the massive Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae.

The film helped launch Zack Snyder’s career as a visionary director and features his usually over-the-top violence. 300’s non-stop action is certainly something that will attract Aries as is the emphasis on the physicality of the heroes, which is something the ram sign takes very seriously.

Hate: Gosford Park (2001)

Gosford Park is a much more typical example of a period drama and the kind of movie many probably think of when discussing the genre. Set in the 1930s during a party at an English country house, the film explores the rich party guests and the hardworking house staff as the party takes a deadly turn.

Though Gosford Park is funny and engrossing, the dynamics between the two sets of characters would be frustrating for Aries. They are the type of people who hate being subservient, so seeing the literal servants mistreated and ignored would be appalling.

Love: Ford V Ferrari (2019)

Matt Damon and Christian Bale in Ford v Ferrari

A competitive spirit is something that defines an Aries personality. They are always seeking out competitive sports or activities, and in their mind, the only goal is coming in first place. Anything else is a loss.

Traveling back to the 1960s to experience the iconic race at La Mans in Ford V Ferrari would be perfect for Aries. The story of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles putting all their skill and knowledge to the test in designing and racing the perfect car is the kind of high-energy, fiercely competitive attitude Aries can get behind.

Hate: Hollywoodland (2006)

A story about Hollywood might seem like a great setting to engross an Aries. They would enjoy being the center of attention and being in the fast-paced, exciting world of movie stars. But one thing they absolutely hate is being ignored, which is why they should avoid Hollywoodland.

The movie explores the death of George Reeves (Ben Affleck), the actor who played Superman on the beloved television show from the 1950s. After becoming typecast in the role, he struggles to maintain an acting career and fades into obscurity.

Love: The Prestige (2006)

Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman in The Prestige (2006)

The Prestige is an underrated film in Christopher Nolan’s impressive career but one that continues to gain fans over the years. It is set in the 1800s and stars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as two rival magicians whose longstanding feud turns deadly over the years.

While the dark path these two performers take is too much, Aries will find a lot to relate to in their constant competition. They are always trying to be just a little bit better than the other, vying to come out on top in the end.

Hate: The Count Of Monte Cristo (2002)

The Count of Monte Cristo is a classic story that has been adapted numerous times. The 2002 version starring Jim Caviezel is perhaps the most entertaining and action-packed version, but it still might not be enough to entice Aries.

Caviezel stars as a man betrayed by his best friend and sent to prison. Filled with vengeance, the man puts a gradual and patient plan of payback into motion. Aries are not known for being patient and they would go mad watching this man wait so long to have his revenge.

Love: Lincoln (2012)

Close up of Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln

Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis combined their considerable talents to explore one of the most iconic historical figures of all time. Lincoln specifically explores Abraham Lincoln’s attempt to pass abolish slavery in the United States.

With the country torn apart by war and facing hard opposition from his own government, Lincoln proves to be a man of action and pushes through all the obstacles in his way. These are characteristics Aries often exhibit and take pride in.

Hate: The Post (2017)

The Post is another Steven Spielberg film in which he is once again partners with one of the greatest actors of all time. Meryl Streep stars as Katharine Graham, the first female publisher of the Washington Post. The film follows Graham’s decision-making on releasing the Pentagon Papers, classified government documents.

While Aries would likely admire Graham’s achievements, the film shows her very careful deliberation on this issue which Aries would hate. Aries do not enjoy talking things out, and prefer action.

Love: Little Women (2019)

Little Women is Greta Gerwig’s excellent big-screen adaptation of the beloved novel. It explores the young lives of a group of sisters in the 1800s who struggle with what is expected of women at the time and finding their own path.

Saoirse Ronan plays the central role of Jo March who, in a departure from the source material, decides she does not need a partner to be fulfilled and remains independent. Jo’s bold and aggressive nature is something Aries would love as well as her desire to remain untethered.

Hate: The Remains Of The Day (1993)

Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of the Day

Truth is a very important concept for Aries. They always seek to be truthful in their lives and despise those who lie or hiding true feelings. They will even speak the truth if they know it could cause problems for them.

The Remains of the Day presents a story Aries would find distressing in a number of ways. Anthony Hopkins stars as the loyal servant of an English lord who tries to remains devoted to his service even as his lord’s darker faults become clear. Once again, the idea of having an overbearing boss wouldn’t sit well with Aries, nor would this character who feels it is his duty to suppress his own opinions of the lord.
