The Night King was one of the fiercest villains in TV history, causing fear amongst viewers whenever he was on screen, and taking part in all the best battles in the Game of Thrones.
The Night King met his fate somewhat unspectacularly when the young Arya Stark plunged a dagger into him, causing him and his army to die. Consequently, there is plenty of debate when it comes to the Night King’s actual power.
Here are five Marvel characters that the Night King should be able to beat, and five that he probably couldn’t.
Could Beat – Groot
Needless to say, Groot offers little when it comes to superpowers in battle. Yes, Groot’s ability to control earth and regenerate may come in handy in a battle if it was to happen in the wilderness (beyond the wall), however, Groot’s regeneration relies on someone planting him again to grow.
Wherever the Night King goes, winter follows, so things wouldn’t look promising for Groot coming back to life once the Night King had his way.
Couldn’t Beat – Thor
Thor is the God of thunder. There is no way that the Night King would be able to finish off Thor if they were to go toe-to-toe in battle.
Thor has overcome much worse enemies than the Night King, for example, he fought off the fire monster Surtur in Thor: Ragnarok whilst the hero was kept in chains. Sure, the Night King has an Ice Dragon to call upon during his time of need, but that’s merely light work for Thor.
Could Beat – Captain America
While Captain America contributes to The Avengers takedown of Thanos in the most epic on-screen battle ever, other than superhuman strength, Steve Rogers doesn’t have any other powers that suggest he would be able to stop a basically immortal Night King. The latter can see where his enemies are at all times and also has an army of thousands at his disposal.
They do have something in common though, just like Captain America is skilled in throwing his shield, the Night King has been known to have a decent throw in him too, taking an entire dragon down once by doing so.
Couldn’t Beat – Thanos
Thanos is the most powerful character in the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe. He might get killed twice in one movie, but if he was to fight the Night King, he’d fight him with his gauntlet full of infinity stones.
Even if the Night King survived the snap, half his army wouldn’t, and Thanos could just use the other stones to finish the Night King off.
Could Beat – Hawkeye
Other than bravery, Hawkeye is a one-trick pony. He can perform an exceptional shot with his crossbow, which would make him a prime candidate to take part in a Game of Thrones battle against the Night King, like in season 8 of the series.
However, Game of Thrones showed time and time again that a bow and arrow are not going to get some far against someone like the Night King. Unfortunately, Hawkeye would not make it past the Night King.
Couldn’t Beat – Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel has an actual infinity stone running through her veins and spent a lifetime training with intergalactic soldiers (the Kree). The Night King would not be able to down Captain Marvel in a battle.
Both have the ability to fly (one on a dragon’s back), but when it comes down to it, Captain Marvel’s photon blasts would hold off the Night King long enough to get some dragon glass weapons made to kill him with.
Could Beat – Black Widow
Just like Hawkeye, Black Widow doesn’t offer anything in the form of supernatural powers. Natasha Romanoff is quite similar to Arya Stark in some ways, as she also operates in the shadows and has an extremely high level of martial arts skill in her locker, as well as being one of the most intelligent heroes in the MCU.
However, Arya killing the Night King was something that happened because all the stars aligned at the right moment. If Black Widow was to face him alone, she would probably get dealt the same fate as when she faced Thanos on Vormir.
Couldn’t Beat – Hulk
The Hulk is the most feared Avenger in the first Avengers movie, even though he’s a hero, Thor’s evil brother Loki tries to use the Hulk as a weapon to destroy the Avengers from the inside. When Hulk is at his best, he can break through anything he wants and create carnage; if he was to face up against the Night King and his army, it is probable that the Hulk would just smash through all of them.
It might not be one-sided, but the Hulk would ultimately crush the Night King like a toothpick.
Could Beat – Iron Man
Tony Stark’s arrogance would put him at a disadvantage if he were to face the Night King. The Night King can predict the future and is a mastermind when it comes to battle tactics. He is bred to fight and that’s all his aim in life is.
Iron Man might put on a good show when the fight eventually happens, with his flash suit and lucrative weapons; however, as his body couldn’t withstand the power of the infinity stones, it is likely Tony would not survive an attack from the Night King or his Ice Dragon.
Couldn’t Beat – Doctor Strange
Just like Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange has an infinity stone at his disposal in the time stone. Along with that, Strange is an actual wizard and can produce illusions on a scale that would even make the Night King doubt his reality.
Doctor Strange has so much in his locker when it comes to powers, and even if he was on the back foot against the Night King, he could just use the time stone to manipulate the outcome.
