5 Famous Film/TV Magic Users That Wouldn’t Survive At Hogwarts (& 5 That Would)

Harry Potter’s Hogwarts is a challenging location to study the arts of the magical world. There are plenty of wizards and witches throughout popular culture who may be able to join Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but not all of them would be able to survive in this high pressure environment for very long.

Whether it’s the nature of the classes, learning about charms, potions and other magical topics, or the way in which the school operates, some of these famous sorcerers would absolutely thrive and some would likely be thrown out of the school by the end of their first week. Not to mention all the trouble that seems to occur in the Scottish school.

Wouldn’t Survive: Jafar

5 Famous Film/TV Magic Users That Wouldn’t Survive At Hogwarts (& 5 That Would)

Jafar’s main focus is boosting his power, due to his desire to one day become the Sultan. He is greedy and selfish and would likely be inducted into Slytherin house if the sorting hat ever sat on his head.

The evil sorcerer Jafar would likely be closely watched by the staff at the school, since the character is incredibly sly and dangerous. He’d want to achieve far more than he is allowed to, which will result in him eventually being expelled due to his attitude.

Would Survive: Doctor Strange

The cloak costume

Doctor Strange has always been a good student. He was clearly very successful at medical school where he became one of the world’s leading surgeons. These educational abilities were put to good use when Doctor Strange studied under the learning tree of the Ancient One.

Since Strange has already been to some kind of magic school he would probably do very well in a setting like Hogwarts. The character would be able to follow his interests in the huge library and might even make a pretty mean Quidditch player.

Wouldn’t Survive: Gandalf

Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings

Gandalf is an extremely talented and wise sorcerer who has always fought on the side of good. But he’s also incredibly mischievous and doesn’t take well to following rules. He’d probably be a little too much to handle at Hogwarts.

The wizard has an inquiring mind which would likely get Gandalf into a lot of trouble. He’d definitely be skilled in his studies and would prove to be a powerful sorcerer in his early days, but his rebellious streak would mean he wouldn’t last long in those walls.

Would Survive: Sabrina

Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Sabrina is already learning how to hone her magical skills, even though it’s a dark magic that courses through her veins. There have been wizards at Hogwarts before, including Harry himself, who have a darkness within them.

However, Hogwarts can support a student like Sabrina and help her to excel. She’ll put in the work and while she might get into a few miscellaneous adventures, her heart is in the right place and she would learn a lot from her time in the school.

Wouldn’t Survive: Morgana Le Fay

Katie McGrath as Morgana in Merlin

Morgana le Fay is a character from Arthurian legend that has appeared in a number of pop culture franchises, such as the BBC’s Merlin, the Marvel and DC Universe alongside the Wizarding World itself!

Morgana would have never got to go to Hogwarts though, but it’s hard to imagine that she would be a good student. Much like Tom Riddle, Morgana would be hungry for power and would use dark magic as a means to try to meet her cruel goals.

Would Survive: Merlin

Colin Morgan as Merlin in Merlin

Merlin on the other hand, another character from the Wizarding World and one that attended Hogwarts, would actually do quite well in the school. The Harry Potter version of the character was placed in Slytherin house.

The TV portrayal of the great wizard seems more likely to be placed into Gryffindor though and would do even better in his studies. Throughout the show he is shown to be great in an educational setting and is well mannered and appreciative of the knowledge passed to him.

Wouldn’t Survive: Glinda

Glinda and Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Glinda the good witch has gone through a magical school of her own, graduating with a lot of new skills and a new attitude. This was in part due to her relationship with Elphaba, which changed her for good.

The character would start off in Hogwarts as the popular girl but very quickly come to learn that there’s more to life than how many friends she has. This may prove her downfall though, as it might be too late to change without a character like Elphaba to help.

Would Survive: Scarlet Witch

Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch

The Scarlet Witch, once she has accepted that people are trying to help her, would try to learn as much as possible about the strange abilities she possesses. In the comics she is mentored by Agatha Harkness, a wise old witch.

She would probably create an attachment to one of the Hogwarts professors and learn a great deal from them. While it may be hard to keep her abilities under control, she could learn a great deal from attending the school.

Wouldn’t Survive: The White Witch

The White Witch holding a sword in The Chronicles Of Narnia

The White Witch of Narnia is far too evil to ever be able to work within Hogwarts. She is full of malice and could be a real threat to other students if her rage got the better of her. She is a known murderer and is constantly power hungry.

Someone like the White Witch might not even be able to get into the school. Professors like Dumbledore can sense a great darkness on prospective students and the White Witch might be too cruel to even let near the Great Hall.

Would Survive: Elphaba

Wicked's Elphaba

Elphaba needed an opportunity to thrive and was never given one. She was used as a scapegoat in a world that was never going to be accepting of her, because of the fact that she was deemed to be different.

Hogwarts is an environment that praises differences and would help her to develop into something other than the Wicked Witch of the West. The character isn’t evil and would definitely be able to become more powerful if she became a student at the school.
