30-Year-Old Friday The 13th Gore Effect Makes Surprise Cameo In New Horror Movie

30-Year-Old Friday The 13th Gore Effect Makes Surprise Cameo In New Horror Movie

It has been revealed that a makeup effect from Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday made a surprise reappearance decades later. The 1993 movie, which was directed by Adam Marcus, was the ninth entry in the Friday the 13th slasher franchise. It featured the iconic killer Jason Voorhees revealing the heretofore unseen power of transferring his soul into new bodies and continuing his Crystal Lake rampage anew while possessing various people across town as he pursues his last remaining family members in an attempt to restore his original body.

Bloody Disgusting recently sat down with Adam Marcus to discuss his 2018 holiday horror movie Secret Santa, which is newly streaming on Screambox. Marcus shared that his new movie features an old makeup effect from his Friday the 13th movie Jason Goes to Hell, because star Michael Rady looks similar to the director’s brother Kipp Marcus, who played Officer Randy Parker in the 1993 title. The director still had all of the makeup they applied to Kipp, so he decided to “redress it and make it work.” Read his full quote below:

We did horrible things to Kipp. I have all of his makeup to this day, so I knew exactly how Michael Rady was going to die. I was like, “I’ve got a $10,000 makeup effect sitting in a box in my garage. I’m just bringing that to set. We’ll redress it and make it work.”

The Legacy of Jason Goes to Hell is Strange and Convoluted

This recent outing for a makeup effect from Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday is just one more way the movie has added to its strange legacy among the Friday the 13th movies. The movie has had an impact on horror movies decades down the line even though it has been widely disregarded for its major departure from the franchise canon and is considered to be one of the worst movies in the franchise. In fact, on Rotten Tomatoes it has earned the third-lowest critic score and the absolute lowest audience score of all 12 movies.

In addition to its surprise Secret Santa connection, Jason Goes to Hell is the movie that initially announced the crossover Freddy vs. Jason, which eventually came out in 2003. In the end, after Jason is dragged to hell, leaving his mask behind, the movie features Freddy’s gloved hand bursting from the soil and dragging the mask down with him. While the later movie would struggle in production hell for some time, it is inextricably linked to that surprise Final Friday finale.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday features a major connection to the history of the Friday the 13th franchise as well. The male lead of the movie is John D. LeMay, who previously starred in the loosely related Friday the 13th: The Series between 1987 and 1989. Though he played a different character, this marked the first and only time that a star from the show crossed over into the movies, showcasing how the divisive movie provides connective tissue to both the past and future of the franchise.
